They are beautiful birds, we sometimes get visits to the feeder ( and yes, we've seen them eat there) outside our front window under a large spruce tree. Since the chicks are of the BACKYARD type we should have no problem, right?

Since this is the second time I've tried to reply to a post I'm not sure it's workin. Just finished the first , so haven't tried to check it out yet. Will chickens eat sparrows? Any one know. Maybe the problem is a blessing in the skys.
Is there anything more I need do to post this? (other than click on "submit")

BobBry, welcome to BYC and the Michigan thread. I'm sure that you will enjoy coming here. Lots of nice folks all willing to help and share.

With regard to posting if you want something to appear in italics or bold, first highlight the proposed sentence then click on the appropriate sysmbol in the command line. If you wish to add a smilie simply click on [more smilies] then on the preferred image. Besure to have a space before and after the smilies or it will not appear.

With regard to hawks. They will attack and kill adult chickenst. I lost two last fall that were free ranging in my garden. The size of the chicken will not prevent predation. In spite of having two birds partially eaten, (I chased the hawk from the carcass) I still love to see hawks. If I lose the occasional bird so be it.

Opa, Thanks for the info/help.

I'm a little concerned about one of my BR hens. She sits in the nest box for hours without laying. Several nights when I went to tuck them all in she was still in the box. I left her and in the morning she's out pecking around in the run. I'm not sure if she's laying at all or not. She has started because I did find an egg in the box after she got out several times before. Not sure if she's getting broody or having a laying problem. If she was getting egg bound I would think she would be squatting and acting bound up, but she's not. Any advice from the more experienced?

She sounds like she is going broody. Either that or she is just lazy.

Just finished a batch of pickled peppers. What I'd like to know is how Peter Piper was able to pick them already pickled.

So it frosted here last night. Let the dog out to potty at 5am and everything was covered in frost. Brr. 26 degrees at that time. No wonder the house felt ridiculously cold. Tonight isn't supposed to be so cold. But darn it, a frost in early September is unusual even for the UP!
