Pretty ladies, Raz! How nice that you can have chickens in town! Our town just voted on it and it was voted down.

Feel bad for those who live in town and aren't able to raise them now.

If you have a flock & they are well fed & basically healthy, not exposed to other animals/chickens....where do they get this stuff from? Is it airborn like the stuff humans get? Can they get it from humans...passed on?

Thanks to all of you for the concern and advice . THIS POST is not going to have ruffles and flourishes or bells and whistles or be flowery. I have composed two replies this am already. BOTH OF THEM are lost wherever stuff, not saved, goes if the computer, through no fault of my own decides to blank the screen. I SWEAR------- The previous post /reply took me 45 mins to do. I was one word fron "Submit" And it disappeared, never [yet] to be found.

Buffy was fine yesterday about 5 when I got home from an appointment in Muskegon. She had sequestered herself in the neighbors back yard. The rest of the girls were back at the run.
ADVISE I DIDN'T HEED : Have a safe warm, place to keep isolated sick or injured birds. Keep a first aid kit ,well stocked with the stuff sometimes needed for injuries or illness. Paraphrased from Stories Guide to Raising Chickens by Gail Damerow.

I was even going to include a pict. of Buffy. Another time----

Have any of you kept a bachelor group? I'm at the point I have 4 roosters too many. I can't handle the butchering at this point, maybe I'll get tough one of these days, besides I'm not sure if it's worth it for a bantam. I have tried friends, craig's list, and signs with no interest. So... I have to decide how I can manage them for the winter.

The red and white Ameraucana are 6 months old and have gotten along until lately there has been a bunch of sparing. The d'Uccles are 7 months and lately have been tag teaming the white one. If I toss them all in my small coop will they settle down or just kill each other? Is four birds enough to stay warm for the winter? I love my red one (Tilly) and would like to keep him for next year and give him his own flock but right now he is very rough on the girls and I don't know if he will settle down or not. The d'Uccles are my sons. We bought him two pairs but lost both pullets as chicks. He wants to keep one.... but I'd really like to find him a home.

Anyway any advice on a bachelor group I'd love to hear.

Bobfry.....at least the cloud isn't following you like the Peanuts Cartoon Character - Pig Pen!! lol. Don't worry about computer glitches and stuff. I'm not the most suavest either but I have found the more you play around on them to better you get at. I'm only seasoned at the stuff I like to do with this hi-tech component and even then I sometimes get stumped or the computer tries to pull a fast one on me!!

Do you guys think if I store my extra pumpkins in my shed they would be OK? Don't really want to haul them in the basement but will if I have to. The shed would be so much more convenient because it's right next to the coop.

Pumpkins will keep outdoors until it freezes and since they have such a high moisture content, and given the current trend in weather, they will freeze pretty soon.

I have a four man bachelor group of bantams. The are closing in on 6 months old and were all from the same hatch. No problems with them so far. They're just too cute to ship out. They have their own coop, pen, and a gate that allows them to see into the "ladies flock" area.
