Dirty looks.

Ya'll know the rest.

Just have to figure out what classes to round out the winter semester. Three weeks to decide that.

Still getting eggs without light or heat.

Lol. That's ok. I always do something and don't remember it.

So......you DO remember that you offered to incubate, hatch out and deliver 20 chicks to me in the Spring?

Grandma - I'm so sorry about your chickens. We all know how much your little Bobbi meant to you. You did the right thing in not allowing them to get sicker and finally end up suffering. You are indeed a very strong person.

I hope you will get a few chickens in the Spring and start over and please, don't leave our forum because we love you and enjoy your comments and input so much. You're family!

Thank you Chickmate. I will be sure to live vicarously through all of you for a while.

I need to take my kids to see their grandparents in July so I will not be getting chicks until after that. I will be sure to come to Chickenstock also and meet everyone.

Angela B - Bobbi never laid an egg in a nest box. She would make a little round hole on the floor in the pine shavings (or now corn cobs) and she would lay her little egg in a corner of the coop. She laid almost every day for 2 years. She kept those nest spots clean and she was stubborn about laying there!

Oh, my heart just melted. What a beautiful Dobe. I was the president of a Doberman Rescue group for 5 years until I had to move due to work relocation. We placed so many beautiful Dobes and I still hear from people who adopted from us. At one time I had 12 Dobermans in my house. Loved every single one of them.

Chickmate, when you talk your husband into a dobe, let me know and I will set you up with a nice chicken-loving doberman:) I volunteer with a local doberman rescue here in Michigan. I can't think of a good reason to ever have another breed.

I truly can't look at a Dobe without getting a lump in my throat. My first was a black male who I adopted when he was 5 months old. I had to put him down just before his 6th birthday due to a brain tumor too deep for MSU to remove. Next was a red male who had to be put down due to cardiomyopathy. The cardiologist said his heart looked like a deflated basketball. He was only 4 years old. My next was a blue female who was my soul mate and had to be put down when she was 9 years old due to spinal neuropathy that left her back legs paralyzed, even after surgery to try to repair it. Then a red male, then another blue female, a black female, a red female, and those were the ones I owned, not to mention the many I fostered and adopted out. I don't have a husband to convince, I just can't let my heart be broken again by another wonderful Dobie lost too young. Cardiomyopathy is rampant in the Doberman breed and after losing too many too young I decided I couldn't bear to go through it again. They are funny, loving, loyal, courageous clowns. Best breed in the world. There are only a few Doberman Rescue groups in Michigan, so which one do you belong to?

Losing a bird is sad. Losing several in much tougher. A flock that is sick and has the potential to infect other birds needs to be destroyed, but when it comes to actually putting down your entire flock, it had to be emotionally devastating. Chicken Grandma is to be commended for being a responsible owner. Both my sympathy and my applause go out to her.

July could be a tough time to find chicks so I would be glad to hatch some for her if she is interested in Welsummers or bantam Vorwerks.

Ok I have a serious question now. Need to pick some brains. My eggs in my incubator are due to hatch on Friday. When looking through the window tonight to check humidity I see one egg has a little bity hole picked in it. Isn't it too early? Will it be ok? This is more stressful than waiting for my grandson to be born.

No peeping yet that I can hear. When I took them out of the turner yesterday I heard lots of little pickings. Temp has stayed between 99.3-99.9 the whole incubation time. I am soooo excited. Hope I can sleep tonight. My very first ones. Hope they will be ok. This particular egg is one of my Lakenvelders.

Update: I do hear peeping

Thank you Opa.
I am doing o.k.
I know I took super good care of those chickens every day of their lives. Even today.
I am a big advocate of not spreading parasites or illness to other flocks. Today I had to live that belief.
It was hard but I know I will look back with good memories of the hens and glad they had a humane passing.
