The girls weren't locked down for very long. I had them in the coop for no more than half an hour. They were snacking on some black-eye peas in the coop and I don't think they even noticed they were blocked in. When I heard the blue jays giving the all-clear squawk, I knew it was safe and all came out.

They also have the tent for a hiding place, so I wasn't worried at all. I'm glad I got the nice clear photo of Gary. (Funny how we want to give names to everything

)

I'm kind of a simple thinker.

When a chicken can be healed up and resume it's life without compromise or without compromising other chickens health, then I vote YES!

When a chicken is going to be chronically sick or carry disease to other chickens, then I vote CULL.

First step is to know what problem the chicken has - then you can decide what to do.

I treated my bantam Bobbi for simple pneumonia with amoxicillan. When she did not get better I had the swab test done to see why.
When the vet told me it was E. Coli in the lungs and sinus's of the flock we decided that that was a serious bacteria and that even with expensive and prolonged treatment
they would always be carrying some E.Coli and spreading it between themselves and to any new chickens/wild birds.

So I say - Investigate/gather your facts, treat the chicken/flock and cull if it is a serious enough ailment or if a chicken is suffering.

Peep is back to normal now and I'd like to get her back in the coop, but she's been inside - 60 degrees for 2 days now and it's 25 outside. Do you think I should just pop her back out or give her some heat? I only have a regular 75 watt bulb but I can hang it over her roost spot. It would most likely keep everyone awake so I'm not sure about it.

Mom2 hope and pray you continue to get stronger and healthier.

I'm finally getting 3 eggs per day now....I think the rest will be spring layers. I'm guessing that once I transfer the flock into the RV coop and move them to my friends they will shut down again. I'm hoping she gets some eggs once in a while...makes going out to the coop more fun in the winter when you can still collect some eggs!

......and Mom, Zithromax will make you tired but just make sure you take ALL the doses. It's a pretty strong antibiotic and usually effective.

I volunteer at a food pantry for the needy in our town and our church also has a community dinner each week for the homeless, down-on-their-luck, elderly, or the just plain loney. There is an 11-year-old boy who shows up and helps us all the time. I was never sure who he was or where he came from but have now found out that he's the nephew of one of the volunteers at the food pantry. Rich told me the boy's parents are divorced and neither one of them wants him around, so he rides his bike around town and tries to find things to do to stay out of their way. Well, I have befriended him and he really seems to like being around me. I always worry about him riding his bike in the dark all the way across town at night, I mean he's only 11. Anyway, I found out that he lives in the trailer park that is barely a mile from my house. While we were talking I told him about my chickens and my dogs and cats and my macaw. He asked if he could come over and help me with the chickens, so I said he could. He came over yesterday and helped me put down fresh straw in the run, fill the feeder, gather eggs, give them fresh water and clean off the poop boards. He kept saying "this is so neat" and "I love helping you." He thought the chickens were too cool and had a million questions about them. I gave him some stale biscuits and let him hand feed them. I also let him come in the house and play on the computer while I cleaned my aquarium and did laundry and I checked every couple of minutes to see what he was doing and who he was talking to. I told him I really appreciate his help, but that I could not let him continue to help me unless I could afford to pay him. He said he didn't care if I paid him or not and I told him he might not, but I did and other people might as well. I'm also thinking it's not a good idea to let him come in the house again because we all know how people love to distort things. It's sad but I'm not going to take any chances, especially when I don't even know his parents. Besides, now I have eight kids I don't even know IMing me and wanting to know "sup??"
