Welcome to
Scio and sunandmoon! So great to have both of you with us! This is the coolest thread with the greatest people on all of BYC.
Tap - Love the little eggs!! Your hubby sounds like a real gem and I would say that even if he
hadn't washed the nickel. I used to have a huge 12' x 4' x 9' aviary that was built in my living room when I had finches. It had 3" of pine shavings on the floor and I had two male button quail that lived in it along with the finches. I bought them at a bird show and was told they were both 4 years old. I had them for 5 years which made them 9 when the first one died and the second one lived another year with a new friend that I bought him. I've since heard they don't live that long, so not sure if the guy I bought them from knew what he was talking about. What does the vinegar do, make them easier to peel? I can't peel my hard boiled eggs without losing half the egg no matter how I boil them. With eggs that small I would be lucky to have even the yolk to work with! They sure look good, now I'm hungry for deviled eggs!
Sure wish I had that aviary now, it would be a great place to keep chicks all winter. Thanks for your great advice
York! I'm kind of afraid to move Mama to the floor in a dog crate now because it's draftier down there. My pop door is open 24/7 but they stay nice and draft free up on the roosts which are 6' off the floor. I'm so worried she's going to abandon the nest for some reason just before they hatch. To give you an idea of where she is, it's the far left top yellow box which is several feet off the floor. You're right about the chicks falling out York. I had thought about it but hadn't decided what to do to keep it from happening yet. If I could put the dog crate up on something high to get if off the floor I would do that, but the poop boards are in the way and the coop just isn't that big. I
knew I should have built bigger right off the bat! I'll go out tomorrow and take a picture of her in the box and her four eggs. I know you are all so excited to see that, like none of you have ever seen a broody with four eggs before. But it's my first broody with eggs and I just hope they hatch!!
uchytil - So glad you got that egg bomb situation handled. I had one doing that when she just started laying but only did it a few times.
Farmerboy - Beautiful rooster! I also like Opa's suggestion, it sounds like a Viking name for a cool Icelandic roo.
