I'm trying to get a permit to raise wild ducks for Fish & Game. Those web footed little buggers are cute as all get out.

Hey RaZ, if you buy my house you will love the pond in the spring. One morning I had 10 male wood ducks and 6 females and 8 male mallards and 4 females. I have a wood duck box on a tree next to the pond and one year a hen hatched babies in it.

Welcome to all you new folks.

Sorry for the losses. Nova - when I was just starting with chickens I had one with wry neck. I had never heard of it or knew anything about it. It totally freaked me out and I had my husband put it down. Now I would try to do something first, but then.....

OMG - Hubby just came in from doing chores and sat down and ask me if I was going to get some quail !!!!!! He mentioned to me last year that he would like a few then dropped it and until now never said another word about it. I told him I guess you better figure out how to make a pen for them if you want quail. I have no idea about them. Sheesh.... you would think he would just be happy with my chickens lol.

We started the button quail because my hubby thought they were neat. This summer we will be trying the larger varieties for meat. Having never eaten a quail I'm not to sure about it but I'm splitting them with my brother, I raise, he butchers. I think I get the better end of the deal.

I had more to say but I must not have really clicked on the multi button and so now I don't remember. Oh well off to snuggle up and read.

Quote: Hubby wants some Bob White quail. I have never raised or even thought of raising quail but I guess he wants about 6 of them he said. 5 females and a male. Need to research them and research what kind of pens for them.

I love all kinds of ponds and swamps. My focus at school has been wetland ecology and all of the plants and wildlife that live there. I'm trying for a job as a "wetland scientist" for a big outfit in Fort Wayne.

If I can land that job, I'll put my Mom in a home and move in a heartbeat.

A big ol Michigan thread welcome goes out to Mamafeathers and Greatchicken. Sorry it is so late, but as you have already been told this is a very fast moving thread. I was unable to check in for about 36 hours and I think I was about 20 pages behind. Welcome again and enjoy all the wonderful chicken people on here.

FT WAYNE? Wow, that'll be a long commute if you buy my house.

Seriously, that sounds like an awesome job RaZ. Got my fingers crossed for you.

Well, the aliens that abducted my hen have returned her!
I went out to check the coop for the night and saw some fresh chicken tracks in the snow. All the birds were locked in the run today so I knew it had to be my missing hen, so after a quick search of the yard I found her hiding, asleep, under the trailer.
She's not injured, just a little cold, so she's now cuddled up in the coop with the others.

I'm still not sure why she didn't go into the coop before or where she was hiding all day, but I'm happy she's home.

I hope she wasn't probed.

Nova, that's the plan. She either got to laying eggs in a hiding spot or just fell asleep outside. Since we couldn't find her even during the day it's more likely that she's hiding eggs somewhere.
The problem is finding where.

Raz, I hope they didn't probe her either.
