I travel for a couple of days and BOOM 30pages to read. I am going to save those pages for my travel over the next couple of days. I may be stuck in an airport today. :/

Update: My DH opened the coop on monday and found one of my girls dead on the poop board. :( This i #3 of original birds I got from Tractor Supply in March (out of 6). It makes me think that something is genetically wrong with them somehow. They were all the same type and came from the same batch. It is a little concerning.

THEN, yesterday when I opened the coop. One of my marans girls was spralled out on teh coop floor with her eyes closed. :: deep sigh :: So I brought her into the house and she ate a half an apple (mushed) and TWO scrambled eggs last night. Now she is alert, standing, and whiny. I am afraid to put her back in the coop. How long should I keep her in the house?

Probably as long as you can stand it.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by whiny could you elaborate?

Yeah, I trained with Friends of Wildlife but this was when they worked with both mammals and birds. Then in some typical crazy rescue snit, the bird people broke off and formed their own group (Bird Rescue of Huron Valley). OK, to be fair, I wasn't in on the details of the breakup so maybe it wasn't a crazy rescue snit, maybe it was totally logical. I just remember that there was some handwringing over the fact that the acronym for Friends of Wildlife (FOWL!) wasn't going to fit any more. And generally the volunteers either did mammals or birds, so it probably made sense to split the groups. At the time (1990's) the leaders of both groups were super dedicated and hard working.

Yes, I realize that having done rescue myself, I may also be crazy and just don't know it. It's always the other guy, isn't it?

Isn't funny how often a group of like minded people will get together as a club and then before you know, the club splinters and goes off in different directions? It happened recently in the butterfly club and master gardeners clubs that I belonged to. It seems that as soon as the club gets a few bucks the politics begin. The master gardeners even have a position called "Political and Public Relations Officer". sheesh

Good late morning to everyone.
Uchytil - sorry about your sick bird.

Hope y'all have a nice day, stay warm.

Uchytil, so sorry about your sick hen, such a heart break,
Ferret, glad you found yours, did you ask the other girls were there sister was? I lost a hen once searched well into dark, when it got light the next AM I went out hoping she would be back, I asked one of her sisters were the missing sister was she clucked at me and started walking. Led me right to her, sitting on about 20 eggs

Hello. I have been on BYC for about a year now and just found out that this thread existed.

I am from South West Michigan near Kalamazoo. I just wanted to say hi and get to know some fellow Michigan people on this site.

I also heard something about a Chickenstock. What is it? And Where? I am kinda interested...

Thanks
Shaun

welcome, welcome greatchicken, watch out 1 day and almost 20 posts to catch up on.

No, I keep my feeds in a dry storage and they usually burn thru a bag fairly quickly, and my coops are super clean. I think she was just a sick girl whom finally showed symptoms. From what I've read if you keep birds you should assume they all have Mareks and not mix in new birds until 4 months of age. Carriers usually are immune after that time. I agree about vaccinated chicks. That's what I'll try and get in the spring. The girl I've purchased from does not vaccinate, and I'm not sure about TSP.

I think you can get the vaccine on line but it has to be administered to day old chicks. Does medicated feed help with Marek's?

Great Chicken, glad you found us. Nice bunch of folks who will make you feel quite welcome. Check my signature line for information about Chickenstock. A great time where you can put a face to the names.

OPA, I am so jealous of all your cool add ins. what to ya call those pics? love the crying puppy and space ship too

I am bummed. I went to take care of the duck coop, feed Aster and give her vitamins, and she was even worse. I had to take her out of the brooder box just to be able to get food to her head. Had to give her water to drink from a dropper and she still couldn't get it all. She did stop attacking me though. BUT while she was out of the broody box, she decided she wanted to try and walk, she couldn't she totally spazzed out, tipped over the waterer, crapped diareaha, was upside down with her feet in the air flapping all around. OMG, it was horrible. And then she started screaching. Since I just had another hen, Skeeter, go broody, I put Asters eggs under her and put Aster down. She may have been a mean little you know what, but she was still a good layer, and I have 2 of her egg being incubated by the broodies... I didn't make the decision lightly. I took into account that she was sitting on eggs, but how would she be able to take care of the babies when they hatched if she was still suffering wry neck? SO, I hope I did make the right decision... My neighbor even took a look at her, and he could not believe that her head was upside down. Said he had never seen such a thing. Well, now he has.

Enjoy EE heaven Aster.

sorry about you hen Nova

if you get some sweet baby's that will make it feel a litter better

Goat milk is delish!

Have been thinking about getting a milk goat for a couple years. Really would like to taste it first though, Can't find any one around here with Nubian's I think I read they are the best milk goats

Well, the aliens that abducted my hen have returned her!
I went out to check the coop for the night and saw some fresh chicken tracks in the snow. All the birds were locked in the run today so I knew it had to be my missing hen, so after a quick search of the yard I found her hiding, asleep, under the trailer.
She's not injured, just a little cold, so she's now cuddled up in the coop with the others.

I'm still not sure why she didn't go into the coop before or where she was hiding all day, but I'm happy she's home.

Okay if I remember how to do this, this should show pictures of the coyote that I worked on. It came in with a snare around its neck. Someone set a snare trap in a children's playground in Allen Park. We had to guess on his weight, I had to manage to get in this cage and not get bit and poke him with anesthetic drug to knock him out, then removed the snare, clipped and cleaned the wound, sutured his lip where he tried to chew through the cable holding him, reverse the drug and put him back in the cage.
He was then released back to the wild...the stretch of wooded area by the big tire on I-94:

Poor baby! That sounds like a very interesting job.

Sorry about your hens, wish I knew how long but unsure, You might want to get a fecal sample to a vet and see if you can figure out what is going on.

knocked my glasses off the counter while I was getting ready for work this AM and they brook, blind as a bat with out them so I had to call in and let them know I can't come in, As soon as the DR. office opens I will have to drive into town and get them fixed. They are so old I hope they can be fixed. Hate spending $$ on glasses. keeping them on with one bow,is OK if you are sitting still, but thats about all. Guess I should start a fire in the fire place, save a little propane, DH has a terrible head cold, hope the rest of us don't get it.

Glad you got your window covered Raz this wind would be very cold for your poor hens.

Hubby wants some Bob White quail. I have never raised or even thought of raising quail but I guess he wants about 6 of them he said. 5 females and a male. Need to research them and research what kind of pens for them.

Four of our button quail came from quail lady. I know she sells all kinds and has great information on her web site.

Sounds like my wandering Peep. So glad she's back and ok.

Hubby got called in early again. These winds just won't quit. I was debating on what I could take out to the chickens that is warm for them to snack on. I think for myself after I help my son with his school work I will sit and sew and watch a movie. Good cold windy day activity.

Wow!

It's starting to snow here and it's been windy all night long. Maybe we will get a real snow this time.
I'd like to just go back to bed and sleep through it, but today is my long day at school and I have an appointment with my advisor.

Will be stopping by the organic feed farm after my meeting so that should be fun. I'll keep you posted on how the new feed is.

It's started to come down quite hard and of course it has to happen when Hope must go take her stepfather shopping. Grouchy old bugger can no longer driver and if things don't happen exactly when he thinks they should he really gets grumpy. You realize that the word grumpy falls far short of adequately describing the situation but it was the only one I could think of the was BYC correct

Snowing here as well. Nasty weather, even the barn cats didn’t want to come out. Horses couldn’t be convinced to venture out either.

Lost a purebred Black Copper Maran hen to being egg bound this morning.
hit.gif
Had been working on her since Sunday. Oh how I hate losing to mother nature. Anyways, that leaves one of my Black Copper Maran roos without his mate so I will put him up for sale. Thought I’d ask you guys first if you are interested. I bought him as a chick from the nice guy in Ada. He has feathering down his feet, good attitude and no white on the wings. Nice colors too. PM me if you are interested.

Always amazing the number of posts that can accumulate in just one day. Two years ago, when I took Granny to visit relatives, I think there must have been over a hundred pages for me to read through. This past October, when Hope and I went on vacation, I took a laptop with me and was able to check the site each day. What is it about this thread that makes it so addictive? It must be like M2EA said earlier; the people on here become a kind of extended family.
I did not get on last night so this morning I had a lot to catch up on.
Nova, I am so sorry about your hen but I agree that you did the right thing
hugs.gif

Ferret, I am glad you found your hen. Let us know how many eggs you find stashed away
