The frizzle gene (F, f) is an Incomplete Dominant gene, meaning there are other genes that influence whether is is exhibited or not. It can be seen in any breed that the F gene has been introduced to.

f f - wild-type, non-frizzle
F f - heterozygous for frizzle, may appear frizzle or not.
FF - homozygous for frizzle

F f birds are frizzle, which may or may not be exhibited due to other genes. Some of these birds have normal feathers or slight curling.

FF are wire-feathered, and have more issues with feather quality. In addition, they may have internal organ abnormalities ( GI tract and enlarged hearts). To avoid this, it is recommended that you do not breed 2 frizzles together, if they were Ff this would result in 25% FF birds, which would not be good healthy birds and would likely require culling. (the others would be 50% Ff frizzles and 25% ff wild-type non-frizzles). Breeding a Ff frizzle to a ff non-frizzle would lead to 50% Ff frizzles and 50% ff non-frizzles.
'So even if they do not appear frizzled, they could possibly be carrying the dominant F gene.

Interesting. Might that be what's wrong with M2Em's chick? FF -- enlarged organs?

Or y'all could order from a MI BYC member [hint, hint nudge, nudge]

Seriously? What kind? I'm thinking of adding about 12 myself.

My girls dogs do that too but I want to know how the laws of physics work:

How does a 4 pound cat become an immovable object once she settles on the bed?
Well, our little Morris just goes to the corner I don't occupy! He loves his comfort and doesn't move too far from it. Of course, sometimes he has to share with the bed hog.

Try an 18 pound cat that drools

Our little 17lb Mia doesn't drool, but she has absolutely no qualms about sitting on you to make a point...just ask Kenzie.

Yes, our bed is a very soft and cozy mecca for all.

I know there had been some discussion in the past about lavender also, I was looking into that a little as well since lavender birds can have feather quality issues. During the original discussion I said that lav diluted blue but not other colors. This is not true, lav dilutes Red to a pale Buff as well. Sorry!
So for example a red and black mille fleur pattern diluted by Lav would result in cream and grey Porcelein bird.

Well, I just got back in from giving the chickens their treat and I am happy to report that I did not lock myself in this time.

And today's roads were much, much nicer.

You can try googling genetics of chickencolors and looking for the kippenjungle site.

This is some heavy reading also, but it explains the colors. (I can't understand genetics yet, but there is a little chart at the end that explains the dilutions. So far as what i know dominant white and silver are the only things not diluted by lavender.) There is also a link in there to a "chicken calculator" that you can use to figure out what crossing the colors will bring you. (Some of it is in other languages, go to english and you gotta know what pattern/color your birds are.)

I have another chart i photocopied off the amaruacana club's site, which shows the % of offspring will be blue/lav with the crosses too? are you thinking about trying some stuff now too? I think it would be neat to have the lav in patterns. So far it is only in an all over color. (I'm not sure if it's even possible, but hey we can try, right?)

I'm not sure how many ways you can breed them but mine is from a frizzled Cochin and a silkie. She looks pretty much all Cochin except the crest feathers, 5 toes and some black on her skin.

taprock - That is one cute little chicken!

Hello Kevin! So great to have you. The MI thread is so cool that now other states are joining us! We have a Minnegander and now a Texagander to go along with all us Michiganders! Hope you'll pop in and keep in touch!

All this talk about being stuck in a chicken coop, I have a story that I haven't told hardly anyone. It was even 3 years before I told the owner of the farm. Farmerboy16, I know you can relate to this one and know what I'm talking about !
Years ago I milked cows for a guy. Did it for 10 years . Also fed all (around 120 ) calves and run the silage for the cows when I was done milking. I got done milking one morning, went out to run the silage, and as I was running it I got in a hurry and lowered the driver down to far. So, I had to climb up the silo, jump in, and un-bury the driver. All was fine and good until I went to get out and realized I didn't take the lower door out so here I stand trying to figure out how I was going to get out of this silo. I thought well, if I'm missing long enough someone would find me and climb up and take the lower door out. Did NOT happen. So after about an hour I figured out if I climb up the driver and jump maybe I could get to the door. That worked. I got out, finished my chores, went home, and never told a soul for at least 3 years.

Wow, that sounds really dangerous! I remember reading years ago about some kids who died in a silo because they suffocated in the corn when they fell in. Thank God you got out OK!

We had a rough day aside from the funeral, my dog got sick the night before, so before we left for the funeral we had to rush him to the vet, he wasn't any better in the morning. We suspected he had a blockage, which he did, so he had surgery........then he almost died from toxic shock. So it was a rough night waiting to hear his progress. Looks like he may pull through but he's not out of the woods yet.

SillyChicken - So sorry about your dog, I hope he pulls through OK. I have one two-legged child and three four-legged children, so I know how you feel.

I have a question about Chickenstock. If I bring a bazillion egg cartons to sell, do you think there would be any interest? I will never use all that I have and I thought I'd make bundles of 10 and sell them for cheaper than you can buy them at TSC or anywhere. Think anyone would buy them?

So it looks like I'll be going to Florida from March 15-20th for a little vacation. I'll be going with my daughter and SIL and 11 yr. old grandson and hopefully my sister-in-law, who is my ex-husband's sister. We'll be going down to visit his other sister and her husband who have a humongous home somewhere around Tampa. I divorced him, but still have a close relationship with his two sisters. I haven't been on a vacation since I went to Mexico in 2006, I think. I'm paying my neighbor to take care of my dogs and chickens and macaw for me. Especially looking forward to it because my daughter and I will be able to spend some time together and not have to do any work! Usually when we see each other she is coming over to help me do something I can't do alone! Woo Hoo!

Mama and babies are doing great in their new larger enclosure. I took them out some warm peas and corn and she would mash them up and feed them to the babies. So cute. I buried the egg that didn't hatch today. Kinda sad.

HAPPY like CRAZY tonight

my Brinsea came, I've read all the instructions and I absolutely hate digital stuff, but have made it come up to temp and then set my eggs: 4 buff Chantecler and 3 Barred Rocks, from my own ladies.

They are due on
Valentines Day, YIPPEE.
