Hello all you newbies and out-of-staters! Love the stories.

SAWEEEET thats the stuff I like to see/hear about. If ya look at my BYC page you will see some of my salvaged coops. Also when we are in town I cruise the industrial park there a couple places that toss out some pretty nice wood. Problem is that I hate working with wood. If I had my choice all my coops would be made of steel. I guess that is the welder in me.

It's a running joke here that DH could weld me anything I want, but it's going to be mighty heavy when he's done. So most things I either have to be okay with them being crooked, or I have to hire them built. He's a heck of a welder, but not much of a builder. LOL!

OK so at the request of some of you. Please keep in mind I ain't no writer of werds so tis what tis.
OK So my DW is disabled with a stroke. It has effected her (no nice way) mentally. She decided she wanted to get some chickens to have something to do.
I needed to build a coop and run. Since I was (still am) out of work. I had very little $ to buy all of the supplies. But the next place down the road was empty and there were lots of nice nearly new supplies. Yessss midnight shopping at the corner of grab it and run. I had a basic coop but needed feeders, (score) and pressure treated posts and lots of chicken wire score. OK so I got the coop/run built. we went to town and managed to get a few chicks. But DW didn't wanna wait until mid summer fer eggs. So another late night shopping trip to the other neighbors coop. Lets see these 2 BR hens and this GSL should do nicely. Especially since they were the easiest to reach. Yup I stoled my first 3 chickens. Those three hens provided us with some nice eggs until our little chickies became young ladies and started producing eggs. At that point we no longer had a need for the 3 stolen hens so another late night trip to the neighbors coop to UN-steal the 3 hens we had been getting eggs from for the past 6 months. And so when it came time for a screen name Chicken Rustler just seemed to fit. and as for my usual avatar that was taken by the DH of Kim Hunter (BYC) at a WA gathering we had in 2010. And yes that is the way I showed up BTW the bandanna has chickens on it. That is material I bought at Wal-Mart.

OK now for the record the empty farm.... I knew the lady and she was moving out so told us that we could come get any of that stuff we wanted.
And the neighbour I stole the hens from..... She is like family and told me to go get them.

But really is either one of those as fun of story. And that is how Chicken Rustler came to be so I just continue to have fun with it. So if yer gonna be out of town make sure to lock yer coop cause I am always shopping and I have gps locations on every coop.

Thanks CR! Loved the story, especially after you fessed up that you hadn't REALLY stolen everything! Hope you'll visit us often!

SCORE!
I just scored a ton of wood! Yup! I hit up a house builder and asked what he was going to do with all the wood pieces he has cut off and in a ram shackle pile. He said, "load in the back of yer jeep," So I did! I have floors, nest box material, several larger peices I can use for sides, and pieces already angle cut for stability cuts! Yes! I will only have to buy a few 4x4s and maybe 2 4x8 panels! So sweet! Will be my 40 dollar make mea coop coop! A 4x8 coop attachment to my current coop! With hanging nest boxes!

Congrats Nova! I love finding good wood to use for projects! You GO girl!

Since I have permission to help myself, I am very tempted to make a drive over their tonight again. They were cutting A LOT of 2x4s...

I could use a welder. Need a new floor in my jeep! Noticed a whole starting on drivers side... Oh joy...

Hey Farmerboy16, so this is your home town

Well, yup we had some trees come down; fence lady came yesterday and did some measurements. So now we are waiting for a quote. We are going to put in a gate where the main damages was done, so we can let the goats out rather than walk them all the way around. So, it would have had to come out anyway. Pity we don't have a wood burning stove - we now have lots of firewood!

Other than that, chickies are good. My littlest Icee comes up and lets me pick her up. They are all cold but doing well. How about yours, they are gorgeous. (You must keep them in a lot, mine are really bedraggled from the weather).
Yep, my hometown. :D That is good that you are able to have the fencing fixed. My flock has been cooped up, but the floors in some of the pens are getting gooey from the melting snow and rain. :sick I plan to call around for the pricing on the sand for my coop. I guessed that I will need 10 yards of sand in the coop. :th Lots of work for me, but it will be worth it that I will not have to deal with gooey mud, muddy shoes, dirty eggs, and the smell. :)

Great for you Nova! Hey Chicken Rustler, I had built my coop at no cost too! :D All the stuff that I use to build the coop and the cow shed was from the backyard. The only thing that I spent was chicken wire, and will have to buy 10 yards of sand, but that is all. :D Also, my dad had brought a house, and is fixing it up then sell it. The first thing I had to do was take down 2 dog pens. One pen was metal posts and metal fencing, the other pen was wooded posts and coated wire. My dad said that I can have the fencing! :ya I needed those kind of fencing to go over the chicken wire on the outside of the coop to prevent dogs and coons tearing the chicken wire. I think that I have enough of fencing to cover most of the coop. :woot My no-cost coop-

I read "loves chicks" in the second ad and my mind immediately added "... for a snack!" LOL!

Yeah I also thought that was an interesting marketing statement. LOL....too funny.

Well I posted my roo on craigslist and was SOLD...one hour flat. He's being picked up tomorrow. My heart kind of sunk when I got the email so fast. :: sigh :: I thought it would take a while to "sell" him. I just knew I would have to give him away for free. But I know he won't be dinner for someone. They want a rooster to protect their flock and fertilize their eggs.
