WHAT!? I am totally missing a baby! I just got back in from giving food, setting free birds. In the big coop where skeeter is, there is a missing chick. Its gone. Completely. Utterly. Gone. It was there last night. It is not this morning. Could on of my other chickens have eaten it? :th The mama was so aggressive at me this morning. Worse than normal. I braved her viciousness and picked her up, thinking maybe the little guy was just tucked in her wing really well, but nope. It couldn't get out thru the floor vent. Its completely covered. It could not get to the other side... One of the other birds would have had to come over the fencing I tacked up.... I am upset. Why would one of my other hens or Mr. Fluffers have eaten it? It is gone! Nothing could have gotten in either. I am going to have to staple wire from the ceiling. I can't believe its gone... :hit

Chickens can be quite cannibalistic. Last year I lost two chicks when the manage to fall through a cage onto the ground where the large fowl flock had access. One was almost total eaten when I discovered them and it probably took less then a hour.

Bobbry......the meal worming farm looks simple enough to do but like I said....I can handle them dead & dry but the thought of those little things being a live & crawling all over.... just make me shudder. How many did you start with and how many does one batch yield...approximately?? They are expense to purchase @ the store for the amount you actually get.

Hello everyone!

I'm Jen and I live in northern Michigan, about 5 miles from Sleeping Bear Dunes.

My family is going to be getting 13 Bantams at the end of April and I'm just looking around and researching.

Mealworms!! So neat and so much fun. We homeschool and every year, we do a batch of mealworms (usually right up until the kids take them out and leave them in a Matchbox car one too many times... Our mealworms have many "adventures!") and I never thought about doing that for the chickens. The birds love it when I hit my mealworm max every summer!!!
Have you done superworms too, Bob?

I am so sorry for your loss, Nova.

I'll just be reading here and trying to soak up some of your knowledge while I shop for a chicken coop.

Hope everyone has a good day!!

YAY the suns out! YAY the suns out!

Just sitting here by the window watching the pups on the deck (the guineas and ducks refuse to leave the coop with that 1 1/2 inches of snow out there!) while trying to decide between a nook or a kindle e-reader. Decisions, decisions.
