use chicken wire and staples... section them to areas of the coop... I did that when I got my dottes. They were put on one side and the others were on the other. This was before I had ever heard of such a thing as "QUARANTINE". Well, anyway, I just used some chicken wire/poulty net and seperated them that way till they got used to each other. My silkies were evil little chicks at the time. They'd pick on those poor Dottes... And then one day, the dottes pooped bigger poops than the silkie were!

I could always meet you at chickenstock with eggs or chicks.
Hold that thought...I have the weekend of Chickenstock on the calendar. Hopefully I will be started w/ chickens by that time, but if I'm not. I'll be looking you up. Thanks for the offer!

DaughterofEve, I have never seen anything like that. Yikes!

Just to give you an idea, here is what was supposed to be the brooder area of my coop.

Your coop looks about like the size of my house! My coop is only going to be about 8'x8', so I am going to be pretty limited on space, but it looks like you have a great setup!

Is it possible there is an ingrown feather in there?

ooohhh yeah. They do pull feathers before they take blood. He tester had to poke the guy a dozen times to finally get blood. I wonder if one of those pokes got a folicle. I am considering draining it with a hypodermic. I don't think I want to lance it with how engorged it is. What do you think?

on a side note, I feel really bad, but we decided not to adopt spud the dog. We decided after hearing about his issues, and playing the pros n cons against our dogs, my parents (who care for the dogs etc if we go away) that he would not be a good fit at this time. I feel like I personally just abandoned the dog....... but I felt that since I was having such a hard time weighing the pros n cons and making a decision.. that we probably shouldn't get him.

SC - Don't feel badly about not adopting Spud. If you had doubts that it would work then you did the right thing. The perfect home will come along for him and you will find just the right dog for your family and situation. After many years of running a rescue, I can tell you that they would much rather a potential adopter back out than take the dog and then return it later because their fears were realized. You did the right thing, don't beat yourself up. Thanks for thinking adoption!!

Let's talk plants for a moment:

I might also have some other plant starts as well. Raspberry, fish-bone cactus, aloe, zebra grass and some native big-blue stem, little blue stem and native prickley pear cactus.

I also make rain barrels if that strikes your fancy. PM me if you are interested.

Randy Z.

Oooo! I have been wanting some zebra grass!!

Story of my life. Nobody wants an old rooster like me.

RaZ - I'm sure there are plenty of very nice hens out there who would snap you up in a minute. Problem is, you're looking for pullets!

OK, now seriously, I have a composting question. How long does all this straw, pine shavings and poop have to sit before it can be added to a garden? I know nothing about composting. I have been dumping all of it behind the coop and when it gets warmer I'm going to turn it over and mix it up a bit, but is it still too "new" to put in a garden?

Mom - Those chicks are too cute! Also, glad to hear you're having the surgery done!

Here is another idea... a "Nella Brooder" box that we built and put in the coop for the very young chicks or the broody hen. I have also used it for the occasional chicken that was injured and needed a place to recuperate. I can hang heat lamps in there too.

Just be sure to let me know at least 3 weeks in advance if you want chicks

I'am not sure. Maybe try draining it first and then see from there? Good luck!
