leg mites are highly contagious. I would say treat everyone, and have fun..yep, the coop needs to be done, bedding changed, get the nooks and crannies where they hide.

It is also painful. The lifting of those scales.
Go to the store, buy Aveeno oatmeal bath. Fill up a tub/pan/bucket with warm water...and the Aveeno. Sneak out, grab the chicken bring him in and hold him in pan to soak his feet and legs. That will soften it up, loosen debris, etc. Dry them very well.

Where is Sam? I believe he is the one who gave me these instructions...
Then you want to coat his legs with vaseline, getting it all under the scales.
Follow up with the ivermectin.
This all has to be repeated (not sure about the ivermectin) but soak his feet, etc every night.

Some of the old timers here will know if it is scaly leg mite and how far to go with treating it.

Here is an email to get more details from Dr. Fulton [email protected] about treating scaly leg mite.
Are we sure that is what it is? Dr. Fulton could ask you to include a photo in your email.

I am so tempted to just go ahead and dust the whole dang coop and the girls too. Tempted... But I see not other indication of the other types of mites. I was looking thru some other threads about the leg mites, and there are several instances of persons suggesting to poultry dust everyone and the coop as well just to be on the safe side. I understand that, but I also don't want to do it if it isn't necessary. But I am tempted to do it, just incase I am missing something...

After hearing the weather forecast if this is what you are planning on doing, then tomorrow would be a good day temp wise.....some wind, although that could change it's Michigan.

NovaAman I forget who, but what was the recipe for the easy cure fir leg mites?
That would be me! Do the wash, scrub, pick gently as much crud out as you can first.
The Easy recipe is 50/50 "permethrin 10%," and vasaline. It's sold in a liquid form next to the other animal's stuff (not the chickens) I warmed the vasaline a little in the microwave so i could mix it better. Don't take long! (think butter, seconds count) Anyway, i did it once a week for a few weeks. If they don't get smothered they die from the chemicals.Takes a couple months for really bad scales to go down, but they will be dead in there.
My girls didn't get them from the hen, but i had also given them the neck drops too, which was 2/3 permethrin 1/3 water, 2 drops back of the neck regular, 1 drop banty. The neck drops are something i accidentally came up with, and i think they get less of the chemicals this way. (there are instructions for diluting and spraying the whole bird). I WOULD NOT give a bird the neck drops and the foot treatment at the same time. Btw, don't eat the eggs for 2-3 weeks, whatever it says on the bottle just to be safe if you do any of this for the girls. If you look, in the middle there is a scale or 2 on this hen's legs that is standing almost straight up, her whole legs were like that this fall, the new scales came this winter: left foot center toe

Neck drops cleared the worst case of lice i've ever seen. Think steven king or something. Poor bird. This bird would be the "mean red hen" i am watching.

Just looked at the link mom posted, and i hate to say it but that poor red hen had it worse than that. Not only were her scales standing up all the way, it looked like something was EATING the ones at the top. basically i had to "nuke" the coop in a hurry, between the lice and the mites. Will never throw in a bird without examining it first again. She was completely free range, so that's why she's mean to my fuzzies.

edited to add that she had inspected this bird "all the time" and not seen anything, so always trust your own eyes.

Well one good thing about using the Ivermectin for the legs is that you can still eat the eggs.
