I lost 2 more of the eggs my broody has been sitting on. I went out in the afternoon and I found 2 of them broken outside of her coop. It could have been a kid or my dog or maybe another chicken... No one has fessed up, so it's a mystery. Down to 8 now. Bright side to the broken eggs is that from the remains, I definitely know they were fertile.. :(

Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh....I smugged chicks into work for Robin to pick up....they're not happy about being in a box. Keep peeping....which makes it hard to hide them!

Too funny.....of course they're gonna be making noise when you want to be quiet...They are just like kids.

Rainy & gloomy here today like everywhere i suppose.

Good day people.

Mom, sorry you had to do this. I hate to ask how you do it but I would like to know so if I have to I will know how.

I put my little Showgirl chick down today.
It was the same size as the Uggo hatchlings..(SillyChicken, there are SIX), and it was two weeks old. Its leg jutted out to one side, and it peeped constantly.
I mentioned it before, and I knew it was not going to be savable, I just had procrastinated it.

It stinks when you have to do this.

Raz, I don't understand people, don't she have a life? Who cares what your doing over at your place. Does she have keep out signs all over? I live on a private trial and everyone up and down the trail has keep out or whatever sign, but us. We even had a guy that lives at the end of the trail call an ambulance one day and my hubby just plowed that day but he only goes as far as our place, we are a half mile back and this guy is another half mile the ambulance would not go any farther they came to our door thinking it was us who called for it they told us the guys name and my hubby told them he lives at the last place on the trail they would not go any farther because of the snow, they didn't want to get stuck so the cop went back to get him in his car the guy was sooooo mad at my hubby because he says we block him in all the time plowing. Last time I looked the road commission don't shovel everyone's drives out when they go by, besides that he makes sure he don't leave any big berms. People!!!!!!

Interesting day.
Crabby was at it all day long, mostly at her husband but a few barbs sent my way.
Later in the afternoon a city car was at their house. I heard a bit of the conversation.
Her, "His yard is a mess".
City, "It looks like he is doing yard work".
Her, "He isn't working fast enough and I'm tired of looking at it".
City, "I'm not aware of a time limit and I can see that he is working".
Her, "You have to do something. I'm sick of his attitude".
City, "I'll make a report". Then he left.

So either another ticket is on the way, or this guy will blow her off for being petty.

I was rather amused.

It was compost. Two yards of compost.
The hosta bed has been dressed and top covered and several new plants planted.
Very soon the rain garden goes in and that will be a whole new can of worms.
I'm sure of that.

OMG what a horrible neighbor you are, doing yard work. Seriously, what kind of jerk does that? How dare you landscape your property!

Teeville- I second that question. How old are your chickens? I'm curious as to when they know to go to the coop.
Can't speak for anyone else, but I put mine outside at 5 wks, and they didn't figure the coop thing out until about 6 weeks. I went out there every night and made them walk up the ramp, and then one night when I was gone I had BF put them to bed & he said they were already out there when he went out. Since then, they pretty much always go in on their own about 30 min before dark or so. Last night they were confused though, maybe because it was warmer? They were piled on one of the straw bales instead. So I made them go inside.

Mom, sorry you had to do this. I hate to ask how you do it but I would like to know so if I have to I will know how.
x 2. Morbid as it may be, but I'd like to know also. Sorry about your baby. :(

So, sorry if this comes across badly, but I'm not trying to be un-PC or anything. I think one of my chickens is retarded! She can't seem to figure things out on her own & is always the last to go anywhere they go; I really don't think it's a pecking order thing, because the others don't treat her differently, but when they get in the coop it takes her forever to figure out how to jump up on the roosts even though she does it every night. And when I direct them somewhere, she always runs the other way and then gets all upset because she's alone. The other night at bedtime she was the only one outside the coop and she climbed up on the outside of one of the windows (everyone else was on the inside by the window) and then fell down behind the food bin between the wall and the nest box and was stuck. I don't know how long she was down there but was totally freaked out when I rescued her. Silly chicken! She is otherwise healthy so I don't care, I just think she might be the "special" one. haha

It is a chicken PARADISE out in the yard right now. It downpoured a few hours ago, and now it is sunny. But all the earthworms that rose to the surface of the ground are still out there on top of the grass. I was watching the chooks for quite a while, all of them were cackling merrily and eating as many worms as they could stuff in their beak! Poor worms, but the chickens are sure happy!

Thank you all for the cough remedies! I got into the doctor, and I got an inhaler, I have acute bronchitis. It was getting hard to breathe without a painful cough (either I held back the coughing and felt like I was breathing through a straw, or coughed and it hurt quite a bit), and the inhaler took care of the bronciospasms so I can breathe normally, a great feeling! Since it is most likely viral, just gotta let it run its course.

Good morning Michigan, much-needed rain last night, cloudy still but supposed to get sunny (and windy) later today.

My 6 week olds have been out for the last few days, they were kept in the little coop for about 2 weeks before that and have no trouble finding their way back inside. They are so cute to watch! I am liking the Jaerhons more and more, they are beautiful.

I do love the bantam Ams, but have a project going with cochin bantams and am going to need the room for them. Started it last year but all my breeders were killed by a weasel, so I kept the Ams. Now they will have to find a new home.

Maybe we are related...
Raz, that would make the coolest Avatar picture

Msue, sorry to hear about your Aunt -

I see on the news that Burger King is now buying only cage-free raised chickens
