What a crappy day....... had a flat tire on my way home from my haircut. Called my Dad to help me out. When he gets there he proceeds to tell me his PSA is high and he has to see a Urologist (3 of his brothers have had prostate cancer) AND that he had a chest x-ray and it revealed a spot on his lung which was not there when he had gallbladder surgery less than a year ago. Please send good thoughts and a prayer or two our way.

Feel Better JuJu for your dad :)

Just finished uploading pictures of some of the truffles we made, thought I would share. Mmmmm! They were good. I think I am just about ready to make some more...

These look delish!!! I can't wait for the recipe!!

I wish I knew my Shepherd was going to be this helpful. All he does is stare intently, lick his lips and pant heavily when he see the chicks. lol Kinda sounds like a man actually.

I have the same problem, my pitt bull sits at the brooder and drools so bad the drool will actually reach the floor.

Interesting day.
Crabby was at it all day long, mostly at her husband but a few barbs sent my way.
Later in the afternoon a city car was at their house. I heard a bit of the conversation.
Her, "His yard is a mess".
City, "It looks like he is doing yard work".
Her, "He isn't working fast enough and I'm tired of looking at it".
City, "I'm not aware of a time limit and I can see that he is working".
Her, "You have to do something. I'm sick of his attitude".
City, "I'll make a report". Then he left.

So either another ticket is on the way, or this guy will blow her off for being petty.

I was rather amused.

Sounds like she is one of those people who need a ray of sunshine stuck up her butt!

Poppy seed polenta baking in the oven, creamy potato soup just beginning to cool down in the stove, laundry in the wash, dishes done... gosh, what do I do?
Um, come cook dinner for me? ;)

Morning everyone, I can see where this thread gets addictive it sure made my morning tea much more enjoyable. Now if only we could get some sunshine today!! Hubs called last night as he was winding down before bed and informed me that one of his co-workers ( they all have tons of chickens, ducks pigs and so on) that we now have two ducks on the way once they hatch. I see the chicken math at work and I LOVE IT! :p

Does anyone do homebrewed kombucha? I got my first SCOBY last week from a friend and after researching several websites started a brew, problem is he had given it to hubs to bring home to me and it sat in a cooler/fridge for a week. So I am unsure if it is working, will be taking pics in a little bit. But how do you tell it is working? It is on day 4.

Well as much as I would love to just sit drink tea and play around here, i have got to get the house in order before hubs gets home tonight. Have a wonderful day everyone :)

Just caled the post office...no chickens yet through there today. Then I called Townline. They said the chicks didn't leave the hatchery until yesterday afternoon. That gives me some comfort, so hopefully tomorrow, but that doesn't give me a ton of time before I have to go back to work for four days...hopefully DW and kiddos will be able to handle them!
How many and what type of chicks are you getting? What are you using as a brooder?

Getting 15 total. Auracana, Calif Gray Leghorn, SLW, BR, Black Australorp. Using the bottom of a refrigerator box as a brooder. It is probably 4'x3.5'.

M, sorry you can't make it. Yes funerals you can't get out of.

Kimmie

Sometimes those things come first. It's gonna be small but I need to attend. I was also planning on trying to stop at the Maple Syrup Fest in Shepard also.....I want some good syrup! On a happier note....Instead of the usual luncheon after a funeral many people hold, my cousins have decided to have all the family members ( basically all the cousins ) meet later that evening at a local tavern for dinner, drinks, reminiscing and just plain visiting & catching up with each other. Many live out of town or state and it's rare that you get us all together at one time. I most definitely could go for a good bar burger!!

Sounds like a great mix flock combination.

I've been watching the ISA browns that I have in the grown out pen. They are approximately 8 weeks now and are growing like crazy. They should be just about the right size to introduce to the rainbow flock when the broody Vorwerk and her chicks are ready for the pen. Once they are well on the way I'll start hatching some Welsummers and maybe some more bantams.

Sounds like it will be big enough and I hope they come soon. Your wife and the kids will be fine! :)

Juise:

I looked at the recipe for granola again and wow is there a lot of sugar. Maybe that's why they are going to hold together more. I roasted the oats and the nuts/seeds for as long as it told me but everything is still light colored. Shouldn't it be more golden?

Opa:

Someone I hung out with after a concert had a door built into the side of their historic house just for delivery of milk/dairy. All metal and so cool looking. I am way too young to remember all of that but it sounds so much better than what I am getting in the store now. If local raw dairy wasn't unbelievably hard to get/expensive I'd go that route.

I hope it will be a nice mix...just getting SUPER ANXIOUS for them to get here. I tried to schedule the delivery for Wed or Thurs...now it is looking like Thurs or Fri...(hopefully not longer). I have to go back to work on Saturday morn. Have had the brooder up and running since Wed. I still have lots of work to do on the coop. I will probably finish it well enough to put the chickens in the day after they needed to go in there!

Can you imagine that happening today?
All the stuff you were talking about was before my time, and I certainly can't imagine that happening today. But oh I SO wish that it would!! I'd love to go back to simpler times like that.

Hope everyone is having a good Thursday, I will be once it turns 7 pm. Only 3 more days of working at this place, yea!! And it's almost the weekend, so yay! I have to drive all the way to Kzoo on saturday morning to get fingerprinted for my license. All the places in Lansing were all booked, probably because of all of my class and then all the MSU students graduating. Wish I had scheduled it sooner! But oh well, it'll be a small morning adventure, hehe.

As I sat drinking coffee with Granny this morning we started taking a stroll down memory lane. Funny the things that come to mind. How many of you ever lived in a house with a milk chute? The summer I was twelve and worked for a Twin Pines Dairy milk truck driver. Obviously this was before child labor laws. I started work at 330am and ran from the truck to the house with the customers order. Take the empty bottles from the chute or on the porch, grab the new order, leave the milk, butter, and eggs, and run back to the truck. As went to the next house I would sit on the step of the open door. Can you imagine that happening today?

Another memory. How many remember when milk was sold in plastic bags? Or margarine that was white and came with a capsule of yellow food coloring that you had to mix in yourself because it was illegal for margarine, at the time of sale, to be the same color as butter?

How many remember before milk was homogenized and the cream would float to the top so you would have to shake it well before drinking?

I remember the milk in plastic bags. Of course, the milk I buy is still un-homogenized.
