That was a great video.

My second SLW just tried out his crow this afternoon. There hasn't been much volume or output yet but I'm sure that will change.

They need to go to freezer camp now. They are 19 weeks old and pretty good size. The thing is, I've never processed a chicken before. I'd like to see if someone could show me how to do it. In exchange, I'll give you one of the birds.

The alternative is if someone wants to rehome them. They are quite pretty roos.
Hey Raz here is a very detailed post on how to butcher your chickens. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...-eviscerating-cutting-up-your-chicken-graphic

Does anyone have a link to the post on how to debone a chicken with the recipe to then stuff and roll the chicken up and cook it, I've been looking for it for a week

I loved the video!! I'll have to let my kids see it.

It has to be the weather that is getting everyone crazy, plus isn't there a full moon around the corner?

Tomorrow is gonna be hot so I basically plan on keeping the water cold, putting a dust bath in the pen, and treat them to chilled/frozen treats. The frozen watermelon is a good idea but I don't want to spend the $6 they are asking for just to give it to the chickens. Sounds cheap but I can come up with other treats with what I already have on hand. Plus they will get plenty when our watermelon is ready....we bought a couple extra plants just for them!

One treat I've already done is I've cooked oatmeal for them, added berries and then froze it. They pick at it like crazy and clean the container completely out!

Hey - Bridget from Michigan - did you just move to SE Kansas?

I just discovered that my new neighbor (Michigan plates on the car) has chickens in the back.

FEDex left your package on my porch across the street - your "live beneficial insects" are in my frig.

PM me if you get this. I'll leave a note at the house for you so you know how to get hold of me. I've been at my mom's for the last 6 weeks recovering from double knee replacement, but I'm about ready to get home. We need to hook up - I think you'd be surprised at what I have in MY back yard right across the street from you!

bungee cord frozen water/milk jugs from the coop roofs...frozen oatmeal... peas in it... frozen water bottles for the waterers...
So far it has been pretty nice with the breeze. I think my birds rather enjoy the heat! Airflow is the best option if you have it. I just open windows in the coop. When I do fall meaties I use a fan because they get so fat and lazy. Anyone with rabbits really need to look to ice bottles, misters, or move the critters to cooler areas like a cellar. Rabbits cannot take the heat. Their wild counterparts are lounging in burrows underground and loving it. If it gets really hot I'm going to set a sprinkler on my duck pond. What about us humans - oh yeah, ice cold barley pops!

Raz, unbelievable!! I think the people who complain about some noise thats a natural noise should be the one's in trouble. I hate a barking dog all day long barking dog which means to me the animal is not being taken care of, tyed up all day and night etc... thats not a natural noise the dogs trying to say something, get me the heck out of here. But a roo crowing whats wrong with it. Like you said your little roo only started just this week, whats the ladies problem? We ought to all go there with our roosters for a visit, hey I will bring my son's monster roo Mr. Jersey. Do you need all of us to go to the jury trial for support?

Kimmie
I think Farmerboy should take his longcrower over to Raz for a visit. a good 10min crow should make them happy

OK since it's going to be hot tomorrow why don't we all share our little tricks and tips on how to keep the girls cool in the sweltering heat?

any other suggestions?
I freeze water in milk jugs, put in the waterers to slowly melt also frozen squash , the run is very shady thankfully so they seem to like hanging out in there instead of free ranging. run is open but they hang out in, if there is a breez I think they will bee OK, hope so cause I have to work and won't be able to check on them...
let momma hen out side today with her babys. they seemed to enjoy the run. they are in a coop in the garage right now, with doors open it should be OK

I called my son today asked him to make sure the run door was open, he miss understood and lifted the tractor with my 2 Basques in it then I think he dropped it later,so I got home and there were 4 hens and the big roo in the tractors and the Basques were out having a ball... we shall see were they decide to roost for the night

have a good day tomorrow and stat cool
