I never had a predator problem at night until I built the tractor coop. I am of the opinion now that those are really only good for enclosed residential yards.... Not in the woods yards.

Got the sprinklers running big time today. My yard... Oh my poor yard. I know it means I do not need to mow, but if the grass is gone beyond dead, oh man, the weeds!

I need to take my run down. I want to change how it is situated and put the meat bird coop into it. Build. Wall big enough to square it out so roofing will be straight forward simple for me. Any one wanna help hold a wall? Lol. Also time to whip out the feather blower and blow all the pesky feathers away...

They say local honey helps with allergies. Can't get any more local than the backyard, literally! A hive of mine was getting close to honeybound (running out of room for brood because they are pulling in nectar faster than they can build new comb) so I stole a frame of honey. By hand I managed to extract 4lbs of honey (after using tare function on scale for jar weight). I used no heat, either. It was just squeezed through cheesecloth to keep any wax from getting into the jars.

It tastes magical. That is the best word I can describe it with! It is unlike any honey I've ever tasted from a store, even the raw/unfiltered kind.

Unless you attract them with food they stay away. The chickens are locked up so tight I think they would survive a nuclear attack.

Maybe in cities, but not so much for country dwellers and I would even hazard a guess that suburban dwellers have far more resident coons than they realize. Our chicken coop is coon proof, there is no food lying around willy nilly. They're still everywhere. And I say again: remember that the population is very, very high. The normal rules of the game do not apply.

But seriously, think about it. If all we had to do was not leave food out to get rid of coons there'd be very few coons. How many people do you know who just have a bunch of food lying around outside their house? I can think of... exactly.... zero. And yet... we all have coons!

Or maybe I'm just not hanging out with the right people. What kind of hill folk are you all hanging around who just have a bunch of food lying around?

*cough* My neighbor (1/2 mile away), an older gent, feeds a feral cat colony. However, I am sure he doesn't pick it up at night, so the skunks and coons help themselves. Sadly since the cats are neither spayed or neutered, it isn't a well managed cat colony, either. He catches as many kittens as he can for adoption, but there is no free spay or neuter program around here, and he has very little money to get it done.

That depends on if The Doctor behaves himself. We've never had a rooster (and we technically aren't allowed them, lol), so he can only stay if he's not too bothersome and rude. But if he stays I'll be sure to pass their spawn back on to you, lol
Oh yeay! I'm glad they got a good home. I'm pretty sure they are standard size, but SillyChicken will know for sure since teh eggs came from her... Silly?

My fav's are not bantams, I'd say they're a medium sized chicken.
