Every once in a while tucked in among all the things I say that offend people, I actually post something useful.

One of those posts consistently gets bumped back up in my "your posts" panel and it's always nice to read about having helped someone out. It's gotten a few hits lately, but today someone posted that they were able to keep their geese because of the advice when they'd been on the verge of having to get rid of them. Even though I sold my geese, geese will always be my favorite fowl, so it's nice to hear someone is able to have that joy in their lives from something that took just a few minutes of time to type out. Maybe my icy heart is melting a bit with the weather.

Oh yes...now we'll see how many actually make it through the poopy shells. I lifted up her wing and saw one had pipped...but who knows. Hows that new rooster settling in? I had someone asking for an adult rooster the next day! LOL go figure...

Anyone in the Eaton Rapids/Holt/Mason/Lansing area have an incubator firing up this week? I have Speckled Sussex eggs and Silkie and Showgirl eggs sitting here because someone messaged me and then never followed through with having them shipped. If not I'll make a big batch of scrambled eggs this weekend lol

I will buy them from you and incubate them but you have to take any of them ugly naked neck dinosaurs that hatch LOL

I am not trying to get my hopes up, but I think a chick who was wounded today whilst hatching is going to make it. As LONG as infection doesn't set in. It is up and alert and very active.

The hen who was sitting on these eggs decided to move off the nest with the other chicks while this one was still in the process of hatching (a very late chick) I think another hen came along to eat the egg shell off the chick. And hurt the chick badly.



Yep, that is the chick's skull. I had two options: cull, or treat. For the moment, I chose treat. It was pretty dirty when I first found the chick, so I had to flush it out with saline. A thread and needle (sewing needle, as the needles in the suture kits I have are too large for such a tiny patient), time, and chlorhexidine later, and the chick looks less grisly. I had to muster all the hand steadiness I had, since the chick is so small, and the eye was very close to the edges of the wound. Time will tell if the chick's eye was damaged or not.




I was planning on setting eggs at the end of today in this, but for a day or two, the incubator is a ChICU (Chick Intensive Care Unit). The incubator is newly bleached, with a freshly washed dishcloth on the base. I also smeared some triple antibiotic ointment (non painkiller kind, since I know that is bad for chickens) on the chick's wound.

Is this the roo that throws Partridge Silkies? If so toss a couple of those in with my Barnies, would ya?
