Some one had asked about broken eggs, don't know if you got an answer,,,,,,, so first check for soft shells, could be some one is laying soft shell and when the next hen gets in the egg breaks,,,, next, could be a little fight going on over who gets that nest, I have been having soft eggs for some tim about every 3 days some one lays one,,,, lots of oyster shell, crushed egg shell doesn't seem to matter, for me I think it is and age issue. If yours are young ?? check the nest often and remove eggs as soon as you can, that doesn't work to well when you have to work. Good luck, sorry I don't have a great answer

They were on starter til the end of last month when we switched them to game bird. Is that wrong? We asked at Family Farm & Home where we bought all but the 3 BR. I knew those 3 didn't look right. I understand that the BBB will always be bigger but could it also be that I got them from a breeder in town I wasn't as familiar with? I know, it's all my fault and I feel absolutely HORRIBLE!!!

When you say "starter" what exactly was it? Do you happen to have a feed tag handy? I wouldn't be inclined to think it had anything to do with the breeder unless you were seeing signs of illness. But then, there's not much poults will get that doesn't kill them, so that's unlikely as well.

Don't beat yourself up about it too much. If you can post the info on the starter you were using maybe that'll shine some light on it.

Tbe dose for Tylan 50 is 4 times the dose for Tylan 200.
That's what I figured, but I don't try to know what the med companies are thinking when they start assigning numbers to stuff.

Looks like I'll be picking up some Tylan on my way to work tonight and hope that it works! Nothing like spending 4x the cost of the chick on medicine.

Trying to get DH on-board for building an incubator (or buying one depending on what we find out from checking costs for everything) so hopefully we don't have to worry about sick chicks with who-knows-what potentially infecting our flock again.

I'm sick...and angry over all of this. I thought I read enough and asked enough questions before we actually got the poults. Obviously not.

When we got the first bunch at Family Farm & Home, I had ordered them and they were already in a box when I got there. The guy pointed me to a bag of poultry starter and I thought there was a specified turkey starter. When I asked him about it he said "This is what we feed them" and also said he's not aware of any turkey starter. 2 poults died the same week we brought them home so I ordered 5 more (the least I could order) and got them 2 weeks later. Again when I went to pick them up I was told there was no turkey starter, this time by the manager.

We rarely buy feed at TSC unless it's on sale but we do go there for rabbit treats, we buy all feed at graineries. Not even they had turkey starter!!! Anyway, while at a TSC one time I looked for turkey starter and even asked the manager there and she said the same thing and pointed me toward the same bag of poultry starter I had purchased from FF&H. I was a bit miffed when I'd read about people purchasing turkey starter that was 28% or more when all I was being told to feed them and all I was finding was the 24% poultry starter.

So yes I am at fault.

Does anyone know what might be wrong with this chick? It's been doing this for about a day now......I'm not so worried about the chick (cuz it's just one chick) but I'm worried about it possibly infecting my bigger girls.....it's got a cough or a sneeze thing going on???? I started a thread over in emergencies/diseases and gotten no real response.

I'm not sure what's with the heavy breathing but when we got our chicks our d'uccle went through a couple days of sneezing and shaking the liquid out of her beak when she was maybe 2 weeks old. None of the other chicks were affected and it didn't last long. So I don't know. I hope it's okay though b/c it's really cute.

I've fogged my house many times while having an aquarium. Turn off the filter and cover the whole aquarium with a garbage bag ( if you can get one big enough), wait 2-3 hours after fogging before you remove the bag and start the filters up again. You Can have fish and no fleas. Just make sure to tape or otherwise secure the bag around the aquarium so no air gets through. Also that the filter is covered as well.
When we've had to fog the house we've done the same thing. Just turned off all the filtered animal tank and covered them with blankets. Same with the TV, other electronics, etc. We usually pack up the animals that can't be covered and take them with us or secure them outside(guinea pigs and such). I HATE fleas too. We had a serious infestation one year when we took in a stray dog. NEVER AGAIN! We had fleas so bad that when you walked through the house you would have dozens of them on your feet and legs. It took bombing the house 3x to get rid of them. And let me tell you...that's a lot of flea bombs when you have 4,000sq feet to treat(that includes the basement)!

My son bought turkey poults from Randy and they did absolutely terrific on the chick starter. He had them on Purina Medicated Chick Starter and has had no problems with them. Sorry about your chick :-(.

I don't have a problem bombing the house. I have a problem with what to do with the animals in the mean time... I know to put trsh bag over the tank, and seal it. I usually duct tape the bag around the counter. LOL. Well anyway, the pain in the butt comes with having 3 cats in the house also. Where to go with them.. I can not afford to stay them at the vets office. The dogs.. no problem. I just lock them up on the deck...

I am going to try the borax. Seems the best thing. The are the worse in living room and my bedroom.

They have turkey feed at the FFH here in Holland, Keyt. I understand that turkeys can be harder to get going than chickens. Don't beat yourself up over it. Everything is trial and error until you get it right, and you did do everything you thought you could to guarantee their health and well being. You are armed with better knowledge now. I look at all the stupid stuff that I did when I first got birds. I never quarantined, I didn't think about ventilation and ended up killing a bird from heat, fed the wrong feed to chicks... We all make mistakes, and as long as you know you didn't do it on purpose because you were to lazy to make sure it was right... Well, you get me.

Not sure if I will get to the run down today or tomorrow, so... I have a busy weekend. I'll try and get it done tomorrow night at the latest.

Oh, and RaZ, thats funny.

Can't you put your cats in a pet carrier and put them outside somewhere ?
