Good morning everyone. Finally getting some much needed rain. My new German New Hampshires are settling in (thanks HH)! These are beautiful birds that she raises. Very docile and friendly. That's the chicken report for now. DD, SIL, and Grandson are visiting from Boston and I think a wine tour is in order. No farming this weekend! Finally a break.

Last evening, my NOTmeaty hen was under the butterfly bush making her usual panting/gasping sounds- which I attribute to being obese yet active- only this time, she was purple. It had just started to rain, and all the chickens took cover under the various bushes.
I made a mental note "this doesnt look good" and then I retreated out of the rain.

Last night she put herself to bed. this morning I found her dead. Very dead- I dont believe she made it much past putting herself under the lean-to. She was on her back, feet up. Im sad for her, but she lived out her life without being butchered and having a good chicken life, even if it was short. I feel bad for my white Uggo. She was her "birds of a feather" that flock together. They slept together, foraged together, hung out together, and got picked on by Mama Hen and the d'uccles together. Now she seems lost. She lost her buddy.

Like you said, at least she wasn't butchered. Huey is doing just fine so far. But he is HUGE.

YAY for Huey!! Im so glad that you took him! His lady always had a harder time breathing than he didI hope he lives much much longer

I'm so sorry for your loss! She does sound like she had a good chicken life though!


If I put largeish rocks in the waterer to keep the ducks from splashing and dumping the water within an hour or two of us leaving do you think they will try to eat them? I am really nervous about leaving them...I don't want them to run out of water before the caretaker comes, but I don't know what else I can do to help keep some water in it for longer, and I don't have a larger container I can use...they will be much larger than what can fit in their mouth...and I figure they might pick at them, but do I need to worry about them being strong enough or curious enough to actually try to eat them? Thanks! And sorry for all the questions! I am trying to finish up the last things so we can leave!

Shallow pie/cake pan.... They may get in it, but they'll be able to get out, and with a rock placed in the center, they won't tip it. Make an island in the pan... They'll probably stand on them too!

Someone in my flock has white watery poo!!! This is the first time I have seen it and the poo chart isn't clear... is it cocci? Is it from the hen that drank too much water?

Sunday should be fine... BF wants to see his grandma this weekend too. It has been a whie since we visited her... Wonder if I should bring a chicken to see her....

I just want to take them everywhere... it is bad.

If the new babies are even uggoer... it will be even harder to not take them places.

the common thought is calcium but I have hens that have been laying soft shells for yr now cant figure out who, I have some older hens think it is them....they have lots of calcium.... they free range, I am trying different things to see if I can hit on a balance to stop it,,,, in your case it is most likely the heat and being new layers,,,, unless it continues for a long time don't be concerned.... parasites

maybe you would have to bring the bag back (which you don't have) and get a refund???? I keep my bags around to clean the poo and old bedding off the roosts then dump in compost... use them for trash some times but eventually the do get tossed. maybe they won't reimburse unless you could prove your hens died from the lack of v.D, all in all it is rather laughable, but they have to protect their buts.
I wonder if 2months with out v. D could actually kill a chicken??

looks like last night was the last night?? really cool house!!! I love old houses, don't have one but I do LOVE them
dish withe dirt is a really good idea as they can also dust bath in it... I was thinking you could dig up a piece of sod and put it upside down in the brooder,,,

Of course... this also means I have a really tough time mowing the lawn in boring straight lines, too...

Last night was the first time that it has really rained since my turkeys were put outside. Well, it got super muddy back there so we laid down some thick boxes but they acted so scared of it. They stayed like that for at least 10 minutes...

If I knew what cat just jumped on my head- all claws out, from the top of the entertainment center I would take it in and declaw it, or euthanize it...I have about twenty holes in my head now, bleeding. I was too busy holding my head in pain to see which of the jerks it was...

cats, even indoor cats can carry a lot of infection causing bacteria,,,,, you may need to get some anti-bodices to prevent infection..... DD got clawed by a cat and the Dr. balled her out big time for not coming in
Nova sorry about Buffy, you sure have had more then your share of predator problems lately,

DH was just saying it is a good thing no hawks have been around lately with momma hen free ranging her baby chicks

It's Mrs.Haggie but I leave out the punctuation because I never remember which sites I use it and which I don't! lol! It's pretty much my name everywhere on the interwebs! lol!
