Oh,I know on the heat! I don't know how my broody even able to handle it! I have a fan in there with a thermometer on it to watch how bad it gets. She is smart though. She comes out a few times a day. None often boys will go near her! She is so mean! Love it.

I also got a very weird shell today. Was all pitted, was able to put my finger through it.

Nice!

Found some a lot cheaper on ebay, I'll have to pick some up later this week!

So today I was quite upset. We took several ducks to Aric's uncle's to re-home. They're like me, they rescue animals in various situations. They had a gorgeous German Shepard that looked like it hadn't been fed in...months! A neighbor of theirs had it, it was her grandson's and she said he didn't feed it...even though he lived with this woman. Umm, if you have an animal that's starving in your house then the least you could do is feed it scraps or re-home it. She finally gave it to Aric's aunt and uncle, but it's so skinny it's sine and ribs are protruding! The previous owner has over 100 animals and I guess at least half of them are starving because she said she can't afford to feed so many animals. Aric's uncle was very angry when he was talking about her. If she can't afford to feed so many animals then she needs to stop collecting them!!! Like Aric and I were saying, yeah we'd love to have more but number one, we don't have the room and number two we're not going to short the animals we already have by getting more!

Fortunately his uncle Dale now has this dog and it'll live a happy, spoiled life and start to gain weight.

So, now minus 6 ducks, I'm going to try a few of them in the yard with the geese tomorrow. I'll let more out as long as things continue to go well. My hope is that I can have the geese and the ducks all living together. Those geese are being so good still!

That is so sad Keyt. Somebody needs to make it known to the right people about this. I have always said, if you can't afford to feed it then give it to someone who can !!! No excuses for this to ever happen to an animal. I'm glad Aric's uncle got the one dog. Kudo's to him.

But something needs done to save the others.

Today was another great day. Dropped Granny off and church and came home and cleaned the dropping boards in the large fowl coop. Pulled a few weeds in the garden and then spent some time trying to figure how I am going to harvest the tomatoes once they start ripening. The plants have gotten so large that I no longer have a path between the rows.

After lunch Bob Bry came to get some Welsummer eggs to hatch. Had a nice visit with him and was reminded of how many nice people I have been able to meet thru BYC.

Then later this afternoon I took Hope's oldest son with me fishing. He has a 7 year old daughter and 2 twin daughters that were born about 3 months ago. With the hot weather is still having an adverse effect on fishing, and the numerous jet skis spooking everything, he commented that he couldn't believe how calm and relaxed he felt. I guess a house with 2 newborns, a slightly jealous 7 year old, and a wife that seems to be suffering a little PPD, getting away even for a few hours has got to feel wonderful. I sure am glad all of my babies are in their forties.

Keyt - is there anything we can do? Does this person live near any of us?

imagine.... 3 yr old asks for peanut butter on a spoon... You oblige then go back to reading.... Now, imagine same three yr old, goes to the potty.... Imagine white canvas and master painter... Imagine 3 yr old... Bathroom wall... And peanut butter.... No longer on a spoon. Oh. Joy. Not.

Thanks! It's been a lot of work. We have the board all painted for that opening, and have placed in in there during the stormy days, but we just haven't screwed the hinges on yet.
I'll bet you were a vision. A step ladder? That's a high coop!

Haha, well, I'm maybe just a little bit slightly short, that helps, too.

There's a gap at the peak and at the bottom, too. It's got the hardware cloth - very well secured - for ventilation. I think we'll probably make some hinged boards to close it up on the super cold nights. Maybe?

Maybe in the case of a severe blizzard? But I doubt it, ventilation is far more important for the chickens than heat. It is the moisture that kills. I've only had chickens outside through 1 winter so far, but I never closed all the ventilation. Anyone?

P.S. We've had ours almost 2 years now, they free-range during the day, and we haven't lost one yet. I expect we will, I'm just saying, you don't need to feel like you're doomed to lose chickens every other week.

They do have excellent foliage cover to hide in when they need to, I think that is very important.

Great pics! Glad the doggie has a good home, but I agree, I hope the proper authorities are being contacted about the rest...

Sat there for a minute and a big hawk swooped down two houses down and grabbed a bird. I never saw it or heard it.
Good chickens.

They are so awesome, aren't they? We have hawks over our house constantly, the fact that they have never taken a chicken is downright amazing as far as I'm concerned. Sorry about your NOTmeatie.

Thanks for that advice Olive. It has been gettingprogressively worse. I even succumbed and got shoe inserts. Did not help yet!

Calcium, magnesium, potassium.

NOT IT! Bwahahahahahaha! Hope Mr. Fluffers continues to improve.

Aric's uncle, Dale has offered to take on some of the animals. He and Aric already spoke about plans for him to expand and Aric is building him another coop (he already has one). I guess he told the woman he will take some off her hands or call the proper authorities. I guess she's an elderly woman that can't handle certain animals, at least not so many. So my hopes is that Dale can get them and I might take a few. The woman doesn't know how to sell them anymore so if nothing else we'll take some, re-hab them then sell them. I'm pretty close to full in the chicken department but I have room for some temporaries. If I can get rid of the old bitties out there that are only good for a soup pot then I'd have lots of room. I'll work on that this week.

Anyone interested?? lol
