I woke up to the smell of... Hmmm... No cat pee today! When I went to FFH yesterday, I bought some natures miracle. I soaked the area where my ma's cat has been frequenting, soaked it down last night at bed time. The smell was very strong once it made contact, and let sit to dry. Now, no pissy smell! Yeah!

After Mr. F ate last night, I was still concerned that he may not pull through. He did. He was not out of the coop but he was on the coop floor, standing, so I let him down near the water. I have chicken strips in the freezer, so he's gonna get another treat. Its breaded, so, he'll get a bit of grain... Kinda. Lol.

I think I might go back to bed.

oh! My kazoo is getting much louder in his crow. He still sounds like a kazoo, but he's getting some volume. I have got to get pics of this guy. You'd never believe he is the cross he is. His bro is something to look at as well. I will aim for both of them today. They are so pretty to me. Almost think I should work out a new breed. You'll see.

My old cat pees almost daily on our carpet. It's behavioral, not age-related. We've sprayed it with Nature's Miracle deterrent, cleaned it, covered it with pee pads, etc. but nothing keeps him from doing it except to remove the carpet (which we will do soon - new house). He did it at our old house too. Maddening.

On a lighter note, we just got back from a week-long trip to the Northern regions. I probably saw half of your homes in passing. Every time I saw a chicken coop or a sign for eggs I wondered who it was and waved. We were in Gaylord, Grayling, St. Ignace, Manistique, Marquette, Ishpeming, Houghton, Calumet and everywhere in-between. Good times.

Well, I think today is the day the chicks will go out. Only if DH will build something to go on the front of the grow-out coop. He thinks that it'll be alright to leave the front open, but there is NO WAYafter we've nursed these things back to health that I'm leaving them that unprotected to coons, owls, and whatever other nighttime nasties.

Among the goodies we found on CL last weekend were a hova genesis, 3 egg turners (motor doesn't work on one), 4 heat lamps, and a GQF brooder box. The brooder is FILTHY, but I'm kind of excited about it since I guess it's supposed to have a thermostat, and we won't have to continue setting up our kiddie pool brooder. Now I'm just waiting on a thermometer/hygrometer and a few more weeks and then it'll be egg time!!!! DH was SURE I would be finding some eggs to buy the day after we got everything, but we would have absolutely no place to put chicks once they hit 4 weeks. Of course, I DID find an EE/OE mixed egg lot that has my interest.......

Film Festival is going on in Traverse City this week.....hopefully it rains tonight so we're busy at work.

(Oh, and if you care for Red Lobster at all, there's a $10off 2 dinner entrees coupon on facebook right now, good for another week.)

ETAQ: Fuzzy!!!! I tried that batter recipe last night for my zucchini and some tilapia and it was AWESOME! Thank you for sharing!

i stand corrected... the recording with one party privy to recording is federal law, unless amended by states:
Michigan

Any person who willfully uses any device to overhear or record a conversation without the consent of all parties is guilty of illegal eavesdropping, whether or not they were present for the conversation. Illegal eavesdropping can be punished as a felony carrying a jail term of up to two years and a fine of up to $2,000. Mich. Comp. Laws § 750.539c.
In addition, any individual who divulges information he knows, or reasonably should know, was obtained through illegal eavesdropping is guilty of a felony punishable by imprisonment for up to two years and a fine of up to $2,000. Mich. Comp. Laws § 750.539e. Civil liability for actual and punitive damages also are sanctioned. Mich. Comp. Laws § 750.539h.
The eavesdropping statute has been interpreted by one court as applying only to situations in which a third party has intercepted a communication. This interpretation allows a participant in a conversation to record that conversation without the permission of other parties. Sullivan v. Gray, 324 N.W.2d 58 (Mich. Ct. App. 1982).
The state Supreme Court stated in a July 1999 ruling that a participant in a conversation “may not unilaterally nullify other participants’ expectations of privacy by secretly broadcasting the conversation” and that the overriding inquiry should be whether the parties “intended and reasonably expected that the conversation was private.” Therefore, it is likely that a recording party may not broadcast a recorded conversation without the consent of all parties. Dickerson v. Raphael, 601 N.W.2d 108 (Mich. 1999).
It is a felony to observe, photograph or eavesdrop on a person in a private place without the person’s consent. Mich. Comp. Laws § 750.539d. A private place is a place where one may reasonably expect to be safe from intrusion or surveillance, but not a place where the public has access. Mich. Comp. Laws § 750.539a.

Hope everyone is doing well. I got a late start at work because of an accident, there was an SUV sitting on top of a motorcycle..... didn't look good. Please watch out for bikers!

my cat, she got down off the dish washer, wet the floor, then got back up. She just didn't feel like going where she should. I put her to sleep. There was a litter box just around the corner in the bath room, and out the deck door. Well any way, this guy is my ma's. He decided that at night he was not going to go down to the litterbox. During the day he just goes down the deck steps, and goes in the dirt. So, now, we moved a litter box to te kitchen... But wait! It goes on the deck all day, then comes in at nite, then I put it back out when I let every one out the door. So, he has not peed on the carpet in several days. And my mom doesn't feel guilty for putting my dads baby to sleep.

I miss motorcycling... Used to go with my dad and uncle. Was always best to ride in groups. People see groups. My ex, he was a dare devil. Never dropped or had any accidents though, thank the powers that be. Other drivers are just to oblivious to cyclists... To much in a hurry.

Most important piece of advice i got when starting out is to never let them go to bed with an empty crop;
I go down the roost at evening time whenever i am in doubt that everyone has eaten well that day. If i find one of the lower pecking order hasn't filled, i feed her separate then put her back in to roost. When i am integrating new flock members, i even go as far as rounding up the lower ones into the coop to eat first, then the "regular hens", THEN the rooster (Mine is a food nazi in the evening).

They go downhill pretty fast if they don't eat.

Anything easy on the tummy is a good option when someone is not feeling well, and the chicken is awsome for the easy to digest protein, another food mine won't turn down unless dying is bananas! Chicken candy, but the fiber helps along with the natural sugars to keep things moving. You don't want diarrhea and dehydration to add to their problems!

Fingers crossed for your guy, he is an awsome roo for protecting his ladies.

I PASSED!

Well, my interview with the TSA. Very cool feeling, actually, a lot of relief when the interviewers came out after their deliberation to tell me I was good. I do need to improve my interview skills, so a case of nerves doesn't affect me so much. Onward I continue, through the next steps to get hired! It is such a long process, but it'll be worth it in the end if I get a job as a TSO.

And in chicken news, here on the farm, I have four broodies. Two are in the broody buster. One who just came of age to laying eggs, layed a few weeks, then went broody. And another who isn't a stellar mother hen. The other two, I'll give some fertile eggs and let them do their thing.

Nova, Mr. F is really hanging on, isn't he? He must like it there.

I woke up this morning to the strangest noise. I looked out my window, and saw Penny standing in the coop, illuminated by the morning sun with feathers fluffed, and beak in the air. Ah, our sweet 14 week old Buff Orpington is indeed a rooster (eh, cockerel? What age do they reach roo status?).

I would love to find a home for him where he can enjoy a long life in a happy flock. Understanding that not everyone keeps their chickens for the same reasons, I'd also be glad to find him a home where he was well cared for until it was time for him to be dinner. Anyone interested in a free bird? I will bring him to anyone w/in an hours drive of Grand Rapids.
