Middle school

Reminds me of middle school dances, too - but with those, it's boys on one side, girls on the other.

Ha, so true! Actually, sometimes the chickens all try to sleep on the same roost (the one on the right). Rosie always gets forced off and it is too dark for her to find her way up to the other roost ... so heads into the nesting boxes. I can't tell you how many nights I'm out in the coop with a flashlight so she can get up on the roost.

My Iris does the same thing. Sometimes she ends up under the others, and if I don't move her, she gets pooped on. Ew. And it's not a good situation for a super duper fluffy pure white Cochin to be pooped on.

Sometimes she will try to burrow her way under the others, as though she was a chick.

Poor, slow Iris... She's the awkward 7th grader no one wants to sit with at lunch or "hang" with at the dance...

I have a bantam buff Cochin like this.
Pippin goes into the bantam coop and the other bantams go to the “big” coop.
So Pippin ends up alone until I get the red bantam Cochin and put her in with her.
And then Red yells at me for putting her in there lol.

My Luna lost her best friend Lydia to a fox, now she likes hanging around with the boys... lol

Now she hangs around with Prince.

Last night was the same, Rose by herself. Tonight, I watched very carefully and the top of the order (Pepper) and the bottom (Rosie) got up together on the left roost. Pepper then harassed Rosie until it got too dark for them to see anymore. Rosie was up and down a dozen times. The feathers on her neck are getting pretty shabby, but no bald spots and no blood has been drawn.

I'm thinking I should move around my roosts. Perhaps one long one going from right to left (in the pic) instead of the two roosts going top to bottom? Or am I overthinking the 10 minutes it takes for them to go through their nighttime routine.....??

I don’t think it would hurt to try something different.
Personally I think it’s important to arrange the roosts in such a way that the lower ranking birds are able to roost so that they’re not pecked...if possible.
I need to rearrange my coop too.
