A few questions on the Midget Whites...

When do they start egg laying (I know it varies, but an estimate...)
How broody do the females get? If I leave the eggs will she make a nest?
How loud at the Toms?

If I got both the Male and Female from the same hatch, is it still okay to let them reproduce?

Thanks!

If you just hatched them it will be next spring before they lay. The hens will sit and hatch eggs, they aren't any louder than any other turkey.

Letting them mate from the same batch of eggs will be fine. You can inbreed poultry quite a bit before any problems show up.

Thanks steve...

That should have read how loud ARE the Tom's, not at the Tom's. I'm just wondering what my neighbors are going to think about this...are they as annoying as a rooster?

Others may disagree but one or two toms are much less annoying than a rooster but get up to a half dozen or more and it begins to sound like the laugh track to a bad comedy in your back yard--AND LOUD TOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My husband HATES my Toms because whenever he's working outside everytime he uses the drill or the hammer or drops something the Toms will gobble. I think it's hilarious myself but he gets pretty tired of it.

When Sharon walks out to her truck she calls to them and they all gobble on command. Our turkeys are quieter than the geese honking, or the peafowl doing jungle calls. You get used to it after awhile. On rainy nights when the roosters don't start crowing about 3am.... that wakes me up. lol

Thank you Steve. I'm really hooked on Poultry, but especially these little Midget Whites. It seems like everyone around here is looking for them, and they are very hard to find as poults. I'd love to raise some from eggs, but have no idea about incubators. Can you recommend a beginner set up for a small number of midget white eggs that isn't going to be too expensive? Thanks

My toms are my back up. When I'm down to my shop working I have a radio on to classic rock and if it's a good one I sing along with it. The toms come in on the chorus.

One of the fan styrofoam models would work alot of people use them. The only thing is they are touchy about changes in room temp, drafts etc. We used to use a hovabator to hatch waterfowl eggs in and it did pretty well. A great natural incubator is a Cochin or Silkie chicken.
