Got two MMM chicks from Rural King (Hoover's Hatchery) this weekend. Hoping both are female. Didn't see barring or white spot on their heads. Thoughts?

Trying to find pics of my boy from last year. Bought a couple pullets. Lavender and Shirley- Shirley turned into Sir Shirley, Hoover chicks (fyi Lavern is a lavender Orp)

Here they are first photo is 02 June 2024, and shows how he progressed over the month till we can see those spots which indicate barring - not to mention that comb!

One still has mostly black feathers but the other now has brown coming in quite a bit.

Does the brown that is showing look to be barring and possibly a roo? I assumed it would be white barring but was just a guess.

Barring is always white over a different background color, usually black as in barred rocks. Neither of these birds is barred. I think they are both pullets.

The chicks also would have had white spots on the back of their heads if they were barred.

Thank you. I was trying to understand if barring was white over a different color as you said or something else, so your answer was exactly what I was looking for.

Awwww they are grow up and at that funny stage. If they were barred they would have regulate white spots all over their body. These still look like girls.

This is Sir Shirley. Note the white spots and of course that honking big comb!
