Do chickens need to have food and water in the coop also? They have access to food and water all day and seem to just sleep during the night. I haven't had any food in the coop, but I'm wondering if I'm doing the right thing?

I'm new to chickens, but my mother in law feeds hers twice a day. I feed in the morning, scattering it on the ground. They seem to enjoy the scratching and I used it to motivate them to leave the coop. However, I keep feed and water inside the coop as well. I must be doing something right. My mother in law says the chicks are very healthy.

I agree with redhen wiht keeping some water in there. If they don't get let out til later in the day, then it would be a good idea to have feed in there, but if they are let out early they don't really need it. And chickens can not really see at night so they can't eat/drink...because they wouldn't be able to find it lol.
