This is my first year raising chickens, so bear with me, I read lots of posts about broodiness. does this only happen when roosters are present? I have only hens, so I just assumed that all I have to worry about is keeping them happy and healthy, and gathering eggs. Is that right?

even without a roo they can still get the urge to want to sit.

Not a dumb question at all, and yes, they can.

what do I look for? not wanting to leave the box?

maybe this is something I should read up on, I just assumed that there's no chance of fertilization, that they wouldn't bother

Not wanting to leave the box, being very agressive when you take the eggs, hissing, growling and generally being a real pain! If you keep taking the eggs away and moving her off the nest she will most likely give up after a few days.

What breed do you have?

I have 5 production reds, 1 black sex link, 1 RIR, 1 white leghorn, and 2 mystery birds, haven't been able to tell the breed yet
