I've been searching the site for answers and found some but not specifically what I'm looking for. I might buy some Silkie hatching eggs but I'm not sure about the colors. She said she has Blue, Black, Splash, Lavender and Cuckoo in the same pen. I just don't want the Cuckoo color. Now if I get the eggs, and breed them back to my BBS then theres always a chance of having the Cuckoo color come out right? Say none of the chicks look cuckoo, they all look BBS. If I take one of those Splash chicks and breed it with my Splash, am I contaminating the colors? I don't want the cuckoo color, but I'd love to have these eggs...any way of knowing if any of the chicks carry the cuckoo gene? Will it show up for sure in the chicks? Thanks for your help!

Yes, As long as you don't have white silkies, if you have BBS, Lavs, and Cuckoos together, you are going to hatch some cuckoo chicks, if the mother was cuckoo, the only her male offspring will be cuckoo, if the father was cuckoo, then either all or half of his offspring would be cuckoo depending on if he was het. or homo. barred. However, cuckoo ( barring) is not a gene that can lie dormant and not show, if a bird has the barring gene, they will show, though splash cuckoos would be difficult to tell apart from solid splash. ( The reason why I mentioned whites, is because whites CAN mask the barred and be genetically barred and not show it physically. But with breeding the Blacks and Blues, you would be able to tell which of them are cuckoo and which are not so you can just not breed those.

It's too bad we are not closer, because I would gladly take any cuckoos that you didn't want.
