Hello! My name is Mike, I'm 29, and I'm just starting out in farming. I worked for 2 years as a full-time farm assistant at an urban farm here in Columbus, and have decided to go out and start farming with a close friend of mine. I'm raising a flock so I can sell eggs around the city. I stumbled upon Wendell Berry's work, and it changed my life. Now I'm here.

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

I got my first chickens on the 20th of December, and their the first I've ever owned.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

I have 150 pullets ordered from Mt. Healthy Hatchery here in OH.

(3) What breeds do you have?

I have 50 Australorps and 100 RIR.(They were sold out of Golden Comets)

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?

Every time I Google a question related to chickens, there are always multiple helpful results from BYC.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

My hobbies are primarily related to cars and racing; rally, drifting, etc. I like to read, too, which got me into this farming thing.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

I live with my girlfriend in Clintonville, with two cats, Kitty, and Nana. I run an eBay business out of my basement, which is how I pay the bills. I didn't grow up with money so I'd like to say that's how I learned to hustle for my living. Farming is what I'm supposed to do, and it's interesting melding those two themes.

G’Day from down under Mike :frow Welcome!

Wow! 150 .. now that is what I call jumping in the deep end ;)

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

You might want to also Find Your State Thread and pop in and say hello.

Personally, I have found the Topic of the Week articles a great resource and a one stop shop for questions which may have already been discussed within the BYC membership group.

I wish you all the best with your venture.

Thank you for the reminder of Wendell Berry.

Are you from Columbus, Ohio? That's my home state! Are you familiar with the Buckeye heritage breed?

ETA: Oops, you are indeed from Ohio!!

My uncle raises Buckeyes for personal use, but he's not having much luck with them. I'd like to try some int he future at some point.
