Mike the headless chicken

Has anyone ever heard of miracle Mike? He was a young rooster who went to the chopping block in 1945. The farmer cut his head off but it didn't kill him. Mike became a sideshow attraction for a couple of years until he died in 1947. He choked on a piece of corn. The town where he lived isn't far from me, Fruita Colorado. They have a festival for him every year in May. Mike the headless chicken day. You should google Mike. It's an odd but interesting story.

I've heard of him but didn't realize there was a festival. I almost hesitate to ask, but what kinds of activities go on at the celebration?

Lots of chicken related things...recipe contests, weird chicken dance contests... and the 5k 'run like a headless chicken' race is the show stopper.

I love Colorado.... but sometimes the folks here are so weird

And, the great news: I just checked out the website, and there is still time to attend this year's festival!! You MAY be right about the folks in Colorado, although the festival does look like fun. Thanks for sharing about it.

Just another weirdo here LOL I was pretty shocked when I heard that story. My husband grew up in Fruita, we now live about 1 1/2 hours away.

@hispoptart my dad told me the story when I was a kid. I honestly thought it was just one of his wild tales until I moved to colorado and heard people talking about it
