Milk cow questions...

Thanks for the validation, I don't know why we never kept twins other then the sterile issue and birth weight, they had harder times in winter here in Maine. Usually we kept 90 pounders and up, until we began breeding some Gurnsey and Jersy blood into the holstein to bring up the butter fat levels. Those cows ate the same things other farmers fixed, with exceptions of vites and minerals (I think we let them choose what they wanted ) the milk was litterally so skim that it was blue straight from the cows.
They were "fatter" and spoiled from birth up through. Its tough when you have 40 "babies" out of the 70 milkers

If I were you I would get a copy of "The Family Cow". It is a book that covers all the ins and outs of owning a dairy cow. The author is a wealth of information and candidly discusses the pros and cons. I don't have a dairy cow yet (gotta get the farm) but my family has beef cattle and I learned a ton by reading this book. There is also Family Cow forum.
