Mille fleur OEGB question

Good afternoon,
I've been wanting to start a bantam breeding project for a while now. I know I could just buy some mille fleur oegb, but that would be too easy! Would it be possible to create my own line using Spangled oegb and Black Tail Buff Japanese bantam? I'm not necessarily looking for show quality birds right away, just want a project to learn from. Let me know what you think. Or if this is even possible. I plan to order the parent stock from Cackle, which only offers these the two breeds as straight run. How many of each should I start with? How should I make my pairings for the initial cross? What selection criteria would you recommend for subsequent generations? I appreciate any feedback! 😁

Yes, this is possible.
Just start by crossing a Spangled male with a black tailed buff female and vice versa. That will give you a wide base to start from.
I have to say, black tailed buff might not work as well as buff Columbian, but I don’t know.

Cross the F1s together (breeding dozens of F1s so you have lots to choose from) and pick the chicks with the best type and coloring.

Thanks for the info! Is there a buff colombian breed you would recommend over the black tail buff Japanese bantam?

No, because sadly, I can't think of any that exist that would be similar to OEGB, except for OEGB, but those are quite rare.
I see. I'm going to give it a go then. From what I understand the F1 generation will not display any mottling, but will be split for mottling. Is this correct? If so, what am I looking for in my F1 birds color and pattern wise? Also, will I select pairs from the F1 or breed them back to the parent stock? Sorry for all the questions 😅

Yes. In your F1s almost all will have the same color. And they will be dark like spangled birds, but not as dark. Select pairs from the F1s. You’ll have to breed a lot from them to just get a couple with your desired coloring. For the F1s, try choosing the birds with better type.
