In my previous thread I was talking about my almost 10 year old bird Mimi. She has steadily been losing weight and has been wheezing since January 1st. I have treaded her twice with safeguard and twice with Ivermectin. Both orally. Every time I pick her up I feel like something is crawling on me and today I confirmed it. One thing was redish looking and another was black.. both really small. I don't want to lose her over some stupid mites. Do I just tread her again? And if it didn't work the first time, would it even work this time? Is there something else I can try? She's barely eating any more and has lost a lot of weight. It hink someone on here was recommending a medication that I have to inject.. was that for a mite? Could I give her something like Heartguard or Nexguard? I have both for my dog. I could also get this
but have no clue about dosage.

Safeguard is a wormer and doesnt treat external parasites.
Ivermectin is used primarily as a wormer but also is used to treat external parasites. However, it has lost its efficacy in treating internal parasites and in some places it has lost its effectiveness treating mites.

I recommend that you purchase Permethrin Dust and dust Mimi with the powder. Make sure it reaches the skin, gently rub it in if you have to, pay particular attention to her vent area where its warm and moist.

If Mimi sleeps in the coop with other birds, you'll need to dust all the birds, remove bedding and burn or dispose of it far away from your birds as possible. Then dust inside the coop, nests boxes and roosts.

Then repeat dusting Mimi again in 10-14 days.
