mini-ducks and housing

Housing mini ducks is really not much different than housing full size ducks. I am forever trying to come up with the best system for housing them. It seems that no matter what you do, there are pros and cons.

At this point, my favorite material to use for runs is 1x2 welded wire. I cut the wire into panels and clip them together with cage clips (hog rings). I like this method because the panels are rigid enough to not need frames. For doors, I have been using metal framed doors that I used to use in my parrot flights. They are available from several suppliers.

On the floor of the runs, the best thing I have ever used is pea gravel covered by sand. It stays much cleaner than dirt/grass and I think it is nicer for the birds than wire floors. Using gravel or sand under food/water dishes and pools is almost a must (unless they're on wire).

For pools, right now I am using a combination of various containers that can be dumped and refilled pretty much daily. For shelter, I have used dog houses, small three sided shelters, and even just wood or greenhouse siding positioned over part of the run. That is usually all waterfowl need for shelter.

** As far using 2x4 wire, I have mostly gone away from using it. I like the strength of the 1x2 wire better and I have heard of people having birds get caught up in the 2x4 wire. I have never had one do that, but I would rather not risk it.

we are trying to decide on our housing as well. we are doing a temporary run until they are bigger then they will have run of the property. alot of the duck houses i see are raised up off the ground with a ramp. does anyone know why? because i can do it if it has a benefit, but if i don't need to, i won't. this is our first ducky experience, so i have nothing to go on!

our houses are off the ground to provide shade and mice like to hide under them when they are on the ground.

ooh good point! we have mice in/around the chicken coop... i HATE them!

I keep my aussie spotteds just like the chickens. The run is 2x4 wire. The ground is dirt. As time goes by we will add sand directly around the coop to help with cleanliness in the winter. The coop is slightly raised and a wood floor. They have a duck door and we have a people door. Nest boxes are inside. They usually go in at night, but space is ample. Coop is probably 6x5 wide/long and 6 high (feet)

Well, I found this this week and we are making our own modifications to it for our mini-ducks.

No door or window for coons to terrorize them with ;0)--instead we are making the roof open up, so I can get eggs or whatever and clean the house part,. Also we are making all the roof panels on hinges, with cross braces, and with latches , so I can get to any part of it. It will be 3 feet tall, was going to just make it 2 feet tall, but then I could put any size duck in it or partition it off for an ill or injured orwhatever. It will be 6 feet long and wide, if I need too I can divide it into 3 sections.
I have tons of pics, but have to get the directions and try to figure out how to post pictures.
Oh, and I am making it out of pressure treated wood so it will last longer.I intend to put pea gravel in the bottom-- and it will be in the dog fenced and hotwired day pen, next to the goose and runner duck aviary.
Also we are double fencing it with 2x2 kennel wire and then 1/2 hardware cloth. We do live in a rurual area.
