oy it's been a while since we had rabbits but I'd guess the doe is Castor or something mixed with Castor. The buck looks like he's been mixed rather than bred true to color so I don't know what to call him

Here's another picture of the kit... it doesnt really show the color that well, but it was windy yesterday and I didnt want to get the baby out in the wind to take a picture. He/she is BEAUTIFUL though... I absolutely love the color on it.

On the Mini Rex's... they are almost 5 weeks old. I got to see mom and dad but cant tell you their color either...lol. I have to find an unrelated male to breed to my female when she gets old enough...... could anyone tell me what color male I should get to breed with her, to get correctly colored kits? Or even a female for him.

Kuntrycritters, I hope you haven't any ambitions to show those "Mini Rex". Those are Netherland Dwarfs. While they do have plushy coats, I'm not sure the hair is short enough for it to be a rex coat (about 1/2" long). Their color is chestnut, the buck looks like a very heavily colored broken. They are cute little buggers, aren't they?

Your mixed breed kit's color is Japanese harlequin. the question is, which parent did that color come from? The Rex and Holland Lop breeds have Tricolor as a showable color, Tri's are just broken harlequins, so it might have come from either of those breeds. If someone had been outcrossing NZ's to a Harly (can't imagine why they would, most Harlies have terrible type) it could even have come from there - how can you tell, with a REW?

These pictures are of a couple of my Mini Rex, for comparison:

All he has were the pair of Mini Rex ( Parents) and I did see both of them. He paid $30 each for them in Southern Illinois, these babies are only 4 1/2 weeks old... could that be why they are so.... plush? I am not one bit interested in showing... I just love the rex coat.

The only other breeds of rabbits he had were NZ's.

Well, whoever told the breeder that those were Mini Rex misled him, just as he is misleading you. You really should find something else to call them, as they aren't really Mini Rex (if I imported a Border Collie from a breeder in Germany, it wouldn't be a German Shepherd!

) I don't have any pictures of animals at the exact age of yours, but here are a couple of bunnies that are a bit younger. The first picture is a Netherland Dwarf, she was about 3 weeks old when the picture was taken. Do you see how much the shape of her head, ears, and body resemble your 4 1/2 week olds?

This next is of a two-week-old litter raised by one of my Mini Rex does. You'll have to ignore the two kits in the middle, they were fosters. The white one is a Jersey Wooly, the sort of orange and brown one is a Chocolate Japanese Harlequin. The other four are Mini Rex. Even at this age, you can see that their heads and ears are a lot longer, proportionately, than your two.

I agree that those are not purebred mini rex. They have the plush coat, but a netherland dwarf body. If you want good quality mini rex go to someone who shows. Or go to a show to purchase good stock. Showing can be very competative and a lot of fun. You learn a lot about the rabbits, the colors, body type, and breeding them from the other exibitors and judges. Probably one of the best ways to get started in purebred rabbits is to show. Plus pedigreed rabbits are much easier to market(sell) then your average mixed breds are.

Also that guy shouldn't be selling his babies until they are about six weeks old or older. Its a very unethical practice, and you take chances of losing the baby after you purchase it. In some areas its illegal to sell rabbits that young. I hope not coming across as lecturing, and thats certainly not how I want to come across, a good breeder would not sell their babies at an early age like that, unless the momma comes with them. Personally I would not purchase from this guy again. I also agree that he is misleading you.
