i use the above and find it easy to clean , i keep roughly 7-9 quail per section. size is 1200mm by 400mm by 350mm high. its shelves and i just put a back and sides and wire for front and floor, i have trays that poo falls into, also on wheels to move it around when i want to give it a good wash down.

Here is a photo of a cage I made out of PVC. I have made others since then Better, stronger, lighter. The new ones are made to fit in a hotel sheet baking pan so clean up is a breeze.

Nice. I want mine on dirt though.

Is that the plastic hardware cloth on the PVC pen? Is it strong enough to protect the quail or is this an indoor pen?

it is 1/2 inch wire hardware fabric, over pvc. The corners are held together with self tapping screws. I have also used rivets on the next set of cages. The hardware wire fabric is attached with nylon zip ties. You can set it on dirt or on a tray. I have mine on dirt in a horse stall and I put hay in the bottom of the cage to be nice to the quail feet. It is safe from predators including rats and snakes, raccoon, opossum, and drunk neighbor. This one is sized to fit 2 baking trays and I did 5 in the next batch that are sized to fit on one baking tray. I am soon going to be making 5 more. I would stack them if space is an issue. No problem. You can view many stackable or uprights on the "show me your quail pens" thread.

Most important is what you mentioned concerning waste trays. Keep em on wire away from their waste. Best disease prevention is to not having the top ones poo on those below.

Well, I've completely redesigned my coop to be a 16x4' unit, divided into 4x4 sections (so I can grow at 4 different cycles, easier for me so I dont need such a huge brooder), accessible from both sides. Today is the day! My coworker cant have them where he is, but he's subsidizing a good portion of it and the feed in exchange for eggs and meat (He's helping with killing/cleaning too. I'm not doing that many birds that often lol). I'll probably add a separate smaller one elsewhere for more consistant breeders so i can devote this coop just to meat birds. We're building today though, finally, after months of waiting and planning.

I'll take lots of pictures, and post em up! (if you guys do lots of not-judging-how-many-weeds-are-in-my-yard lol)

Well, something came up for my buddy and he had to run so we didn't finish, but we'll finish next saturday. Here is how it stands now



Still trying to decide what I want to do with the doors, top mount vs front/back mount. The hardware cloth wont be here till wednesday (BTW, Amazon has it for under $60 for 50 feet of 4 foot wide, free 2day if you have prime) along wiht a better staplegun, so its not a big deal. I'm going to get a hovabator and stuff ordered this week as well, and set up the brooder area in my 2nd spare closet (perks of a good house as a single guy, I have 3 closets all to myself, and only need 1 for clothes lol)

I was just on alibaba.com looking at quail pens. The chinese are only building theres 7" tall. Great ladder systems but I thought they were a little short.

I would encourage you to use front door opening because top doors are difficult to open at anything above 3'6'' high.
What I found to be the most important was to keep them under shade as much as possible in AZ.
