Mink attack - need help deciding care !

I had a mink get into my duck pen. It got 2 of them, one of which being our only girl I have 2 indian runner drake's left, one with an injury that I need advice on treatment. It happened 2 days ago and he is now out of shock and is preening and drinking water. I have him inside in a crate since temperatures in Indiana are so cold. The injury is behind his right eye, and something is sticking out. My question is, do we need to take him to a vet or can we treat this at home? If home trwatment, any advice on what I should give him? I would really prefer not to take him to a vet. Pictures are graphic!

Can you post more pictures at different angles? It's really difficult to tell what it is from just the one picture. Is it hard or soft? How is he eating/drinking? It almost looks like a piece of bone.

I think if you have access to a veterinarian familiar with birds, that would be the best line of route to take. Moisten the area up well with a water-soluble lubricant, or antibacterial ointment until you can see the vet.

That does look to be a piece of bone. This is definitely not something you can treat at home. Go to a vet and in the mean time keep it moist like Issac said.

Thank you all for your advice, I will see about getting him to a vet.

I do not think it is a bone, my husband touched it when we were examining his wounds and it was soft

Nothing penetrates like Lugols solution.
I have found that it's far more effective than petroleum grease based antibiotic ointments.

From the pictures, it does not look like a bone to me either.
