Hi
My husband and I just moved out to the country and have our own 5 acres (Hence Minnie Farmer). My first order of business is to get some chickens! Our mini farm is really more of a hobby for me. In additon to chickens, I will have an acre veggie garden to start with. I also care for horses, but they are not on our property.

I am going to be building my own coop using recycled materials (pallets and dog kennel panels mostly!).

Can't wait for spring and my first chicks!

Hello and welcome to BYC

Pallets are great for building coops. Have a look here for ideas:

Welcome to BYC from California wine country in the Western Sierra Foothills.

Let me share my favorite resource for deciding on breeds: Henderson's Handy Dandy Chicken Chart: www.Ithaca.edu/staff/jhenderson/chooks/chooks.html

Sometimes I think a breed is so pretty, then I refer to the list to consider how well it will "fit" in my situation. I have a very mixed flock - with your property you won't have to stick to just a few hens.
;)

Watch out for Chicken Math. :D
