Miscellaneous Meeps - Hatching my Dreams

My Wyatt is sort of the same way, pretty chill and easygoing with people but if you reach toward him suddenly, CHOMP. I think in his case, though, it's a reaction of surprise, so I've had to learn to be careful about things like reaching into the coop for their feeders if I don't know where he is. He's otherwise such an easygoing guy (if a bit full of himself, as roosters often are ) that I can't believe it's any kind of outright human aggression.

hmm, maybe with his crest, even if he knows I'm there it still startles him when a hand is all of a sudden next to him. I'll have to test that. I kinda have a feeling he's going to take an easily seen hand as an invitation to chomp though

I'm gonna be honest and say this is one of those classes when I should be the student, not the teacher.

I did the chomp test with star last night, I made sure he could see my hand in front of him, moved it slowly back and forth and could tell he was watching it, then reached toward him to touch him. No biting! I repeated it and still no bite, but I picked him up and as his feet were leaving the ground he did try a much softer nip, and missed. Then was his happy little floofy self being held and spoiled.

Ok, so the chomp test was a bust, the results are wildly inconsistent each time I try it at this point I think it's a habit. But it does seem if I offer my hand near him, he pecks it much lighter, and then I can pet him. I picked him up last night and he just melted down and got cozy, it was so cute. I think he's trying to ensure he stays here

I kept 3 satins, not on purpose, but they didn't sell as chicks, and once they go outside my rule is they stay. So, proud owner of three interestingly colored satins! I think 1 is for sure a pullet, one might be a pullet but I'm not 100% sure and the third I believe is a cockerel. As he is colorful I'm sure my hubby is going to claim him as his own.

These three were supposed to be sold, so the way you don't get attached is you don't handle them and kinda ignore them, well, now I have some wild satins who don't like me trying to handle and photograph them these are 12 weeks old.

This is the one I think is a pullet, and I think is a partridge, I'm going to have to post all three in the genetics forum!


This one I'm not sure, it may be a pullet, but it does have a little bit of a comb, but so does the one above it doesn't have a tail yet. I really like this color but I don't know what it's called or how to make more.



This next one I'm confident is a cockerel, he has pointy saddle feathers and a thicker comb than the other two.

They are all gorgeous but that first one you think might be partridge is.....WOW !!

I see partridge and probably charcoal in the first one (charcoal makes the crest darker like that) and the second one looks like silver wheaten. I don't remember what the gene is that causes the darker neck feathering in wheaten like that, maybe being split to partridge? Don't quote me on that! If she is wheaten, then she's certainly a pullet because males are colored radically differently.

The cockerel is tougher to say because he could be something like blue or blue birchen with leakage, or he could also be wheaten or partridge, or a few other things. Male colorations tend to look pretty similar to one another, especially in juvenile plumage. If you have any pictures of his chick down that might help to narrow it down. Actually, the chick down coloring on any of them probably would help to confirm a few things.

Let me see if I can find the chick photos. I think the light colored one was pure white and extra fluffy. Will look for pics...

These chicks are from my "BBS" silkies, but I had the one blue partridge, and then that mauve, all three of these should be from those two females and I had a blue satin male with them.

Ok, found a bunch of photos, hopefully I can pair them up correctly!

Two had chipmunk stripes, one was solid yellowy/ white

I looked up wheaten chickens and other than the black in her hackles, it does look possible. Now I'm wondering, where did that come from!?! Is wheaten recessive and takes two copies?

Males I have to cross her with (next year) are a mauve, chocolate frizzle, black, and light blue. Would any of these throw cool patterns with her? Or will they just make "normal" color patterns?

I still think they are love bites.
