When chickens first start laying, are their first 2-3 miscolored? I found my first egg in the nesting box 2 days ago (first with shell) and I just assumed it was my RIR because she is closest to point of lay (I thought) so I posted this picture and some suggested it my speckled Sussex that laid that egg? I just want to confirm which chicken laid the egg. My RIR was always scratching around in the nesting boxes, squatting, she became very vocal, and her comb is bright red.

Odds are it's the RIR if she's the furthest in Point Of Lay. You really won't know unless you witness the bird in the nest.

There is a multitude of things happening to make an egg. All of these processes are maturing at different times. Color being one of them. Think of it as a factory production line and the color sprayer doesn't have paint yet. It's in this same way that you get very thin shells or even eggs with only the membrane.

Okay thank you for the confirmation:highfive:

My speckled sussex lays very light tan eggs that color. The RIR I had laid dark brown eggs.
