Miss Prissy - Question re: sewing / pinning

can I just back it to a cotton fabric that I already have on hand by sewing it to it? I'm using my dad's suits and things (he passed away in August) so I have a ton of fabric here, ranging from silks to cottons to poly's and everything in between.

cotton seems the most heavy and stable - of course then there is what was IN the tie itself - a heavy felt - but its not wide enough so I'd have to stitch 2 together and then stitch the tie onto that before cutting it. I opened up the tie, which is why its not wide enough - I need a 3.5 X 24 in. long strip - so opening the ties allow for this measurement.

Would that work?

oh sure you could do that too - it will change the hand and the drape of the silk, but it may be just want you want anyway. Silk organza or batiste would have almost no effect on the drape and hand of the tie silk.

I wouldn't use the felt interlining unless you pre-wash it because if its wool felt it will certainly shrink if the finished quilt is washed.

Thank you so much!

I am going to use cotton then - just plain old duck cotton, like what Dockers are made out of, to back it.

The ties are being used as the center block for a 9 block - while the rest of the 9 block is going to be made up of the different suits/pants etc. I figured that way the colorfulness of the tie and the uniqueness of them will give it that "pop" - or at least thats the plan.

So far I've pieced together 4 blocks that I like and set them all aside in baggies - now I need 8 more - I'm trying for 12 different blocks, and I'll get 6 of the same block out of each 24 in. strip, but I want to have variety and repeat each block twice at least.

I was thinking 6 across and 8 down with 3 inch dividers (bars) so that would make the quilt 75 X 99

is that an off size? I need a queen size quilt which I know a queen is like 60 X 80 mattress but I want it to drape down the sides - so I'm guessing this would be more than plenty, but I want it to be proportioned correctly - would this be off really badly?

That would work too because that type of backing will make the hand of the tie silks will be more like that of the suiting fabrics in the rest of the blocks. One thing though "cotton duck" is actually another name for canvas, I think you mean cotton twill?

Hopefully someon else will jump in to help out with the math on the block sizes and such - while I do know alot about garment fabrics and garment sewing I don't quilt so I'm no help there!
