One of my EE cross that is about 8-12 weeks old got pecked in her right eye by another chicken.. The eye itself looks swollen and very red & bloody. I'm thinking that the eye is now gone. I've placed her in a cage with food & medicated water. I will go by TSC this afternoon to get some tye ointment (I assume you can use the same ointment that you use on horses) which should aide in healing. I know she can make it with only one eye, but other than placing medicated ointment in her injured eye, what other care needs are available?
TIA

First, I'd try to make sure whether or not the eye is missing.

You'll want to clean out that area with Sterile Eye Wash that you get from the first aid section of a pharmacy. You might have to ask the pharmacist. It contains sterile water and boric acid. Or you can get plain saline - also ask the pharmacist. Explain it's for an eye wound.

You'll want to flush the socket thoroughly in case there's any dirt in there. Then use the terramycin opthalmic ointment (yep, same as for horses) in the socket.

Monitor to make sure no flies get in there! Check daily.

If she gets a systemic infection, you can use penicillin or Baytril if your vet will prescribe. Don't use the packages from the store unless they're one of the above.

Any time you medicate you should always use probiotics at the same time. TSC carries Probios, my absolute favorite for birds. You could also use a horse probiotic (with live cultures, not just byproducts of fermentation) if you have them for your horse. (They're awesome for horses by the way, and help feed utilization and digestion.)

If you medicate using a -mycin or -cycline, never use yogurt or another high dairy probiotic during medication.

Yep eye is missing. Plucked clean out. I did go ahead with your suggestions, clean out socket etc. I would have done it anyway, just didn't put my whole procedure train of thought in the last post. I will however use your suggestion about the horse probiotic. Am well familure with that as I've used it frequently on my horses, especially my two orphans/rejects.
Thanks for the reply BTW. She seems to understand that I'm only trying to help her. Doesnt resist when I handle her. She has eaten today as her crop is full. Could be she ate well since I took her some scrambled eggs & chopped hot dog in addition to her scratch. Also noticed that her drinking water which I put ABT in has been drank too. So her appitite is good and I think that she will make it dispite only having one eye. Good thing she has a sibling, sort of a seeing eye companion.
