I have a four week Cuckoo Maran with irritated skin and missing feathers on the back of her neck. She is behaving normally although I have noticed her scratching and pecking at the area a little. I have not seen any of the flock pecking at her or bullying her either. Their coop and run are new and clean and she is the only one who has this. I want to prevent this from getting worse or infected. What do I do?

Still waiting for help. I haven't separated her as the other chicks do not seem to notice or be pecking her. Today it is beginning to look swollen. Please send advice!!!

4 weeks is young so you need to watch what you give them. Are you feeding just chick starter? So I’m looking at the pictures and I see the skin under the wings but that looks normal to me since she is so young…still growing adult feathers. The little spot on the neck seems to be the issue. You can put a little cortisone on it to stop the itching and see if that helps. However I would call a local vet to ask. They usually tell you to treat for mites first but she’s so young. Do you have a dust bath area for the babies? I put paver sand in a large shallow pan. Vets can also prescribe antibiotics or pain/inflammation meds.

Wife is a would care nurse for people so she uses triple antibiotic oinment on the raw after a gentle cleaning with saline water. Then it is best to isolate the chick. I'd make sure so type of predator can get near any of the others. This to me does look like a peck would though.

She has been separated but is looking worse. We've noticed her scratching at herself. We used blue-kote and have checked for mites. Below is an updated picture. She has only ever been with her original brood and everything is new (coop, run, roosts, etc). I can't imagine where she could have picked up mites.

Questions abut things like this are often more than realistic answers I'm afraid. Unless someone has experience it it may remain a mystery. I hope not. Maybe someone with more experience will answer soon.
