Last night's head count revealed my black Australorp pullet is gone... of course whatever took her had to get somebody that's laying, instead of, say, the barred rock who hasn't given us an egg in months

Not that I want to lose any of them, mind you. Grrr... I don't know when it happened, and there's no sign, not even a couple stray feathers. We have foxes around here, and there have been bobcat sightings; we have hawks too, and sometimes coyotes. Today I spent some time cutting brush to improve visibility for the chickens, and will be doing more of that tomorrow. Sigh.

That has happened to me twice

, the first time it was when I went to let may 2 bantams out of the coop and there wasn't a trace. There was no sign of anything entering or exiting the coop and no feathers within, the second time I went to put them away and noticed one was missing, later I found her body not to deep in the woods. I don't know why they always like to take the laying ones <sigh>

I second the annoyence with layers being killed. My dogs got a layer of mine and so far i had only three laying
