Call me a paranoid chicken mom.... Almost every night I go out to the coop and count my chickens to make sure everyone made it back inside the coop. I don't let my chickens free range every day but quite a few of them simply fly over the 4' fence and go maverick on me. Tonight I had an appointment and didn't get home until well after dark. Hubby informed me as soon as I got home that there was a chicken in a tree and needed help getting her. Well, that's odd....my girls have never nested in a tree? I went out side in the dark, cold rain to look for her. Sure enough, it was one of my Blue Andalusians. I grabbed a pole and poked at her so she flew to the ground. After a bit of drama, we managed to corner her in the barn and I carried her back to the coop. I proceeded to do my customary count....

Uh, 2 chickens are missing. :( So the search began. We found another one in the barn rafters.... I can't get to her tonight but she should be safe. That left the last one....a Black Australorp. We searched high and low for her. Did I mention that it is pitch black and raining outside??? I spent almost 45 minutes looking for her.... Still can't find her.

:hit I'm praying that she is alright and just hiding somewhere.... Although I am very concerned about why THREE of my girls did not go back in their coop tonight.

I am so sorry.
Did you notice anything odd with the coop? I know it was raining but was there any signs of a predator around that maybe scared them right before dark and they didn’t make it inside in time.

I didn't see anything that looked out of place but it's hard to tell because it is dark outside. My husband fed our horses tonight and he said he noticed that there were a couple of chickens out, but they were running along the fence like they were trying to figure out how to get back in the chicken yard. He said he figured they would just fly back over the fence like they do every night. He didn't see anything chasing them.

Just letting anyone know who might be reading this thread....our missing Australorp came home this morning! :celebrate

Not sure where she was hiding last night or why she didn't go in the coop with the others....but she was in the chicken yard this morning begging to be fed with the others!
Hopefully it was just because it was dark! I'm from Arkansas too!

All 3 chickens who were out are part of the young pullets that I got from a hatchery in late summer (end of August). I've had several incidents of them getting "locked out" of their coop because they dawdle around the chicken yard at dusk and my coop is on an automatic door timer. However, that wasn't the case last night... The door was still open so they could have easily made it inside. Not sure what prompted them to go elsewhere instead of their coop.

ETA - which part of Arkansas are you in, if you are willing to share? :)

Glad they are all well!
Maybe one of your adults is guarding the door, and the pullets are afraid to come in past her?
Mary

That is possible.... There's a RIR hen that likes to sit in a particular spot that happens to be right above the door. She is high enough that she can't reach them as they walk in the door, but I'm sure it is probably intimidating to see her up there. I told DH that I wanted to add some poop boards under a couple of the roosts, including that one, so if that is why they are reluctant to enter it will hopefully help resolve the situation.
