Missouri is challenging California's requirements on cage size for chickens.

I think a state has a right not to accept a product from another state. Animal rights is a serious issue. And that includes chickens.

I think that a smart chicken company would use larger cages, and advertise how it "cares" about it's chickens, and make people go "awww".

FogHorn LegHorn was not just a chicken
Bugs Bunny was not just a rabbit
Charlotte was not just a spider
Mighty mouse was not just a rodent

Were these small cage keepers kids once? Did they not get attached to these animal stars?
If larger cages mean less profit, it should have never been done to begin with.

What if a state decides that all products imported to that state must be produced by white people ?

That's racial and illegal.

I think it boils down to whether state government can lawfully make that decision for their state. Was this voted on by people in that state?

I don't think it's going to break the bank for Missouri.

I'm glad a state is taking a stand against inhumane treatment. I hope my state does it as well.

Missouri wants to continue keeping their chickens in inhumane conditions because they make more money that way? Why didn't they do the humane thing and have rules about it right from the start.

As us BYC'ers as a group, 7 years ago there was less than 10k members. Now there's over 150k members. I certainly hope that small cage chicken keepers have suffered financially from backyard chicken owners. I hope they notice that some cities have changed their laws about keeping chickens within city limits.

OK, let me put it this way. Should a state be able to block another state from importing products because their minimum wage is lower ?

States are free to determine what is legal to be sold within the state. California has set stricter standards for emissions on automobiles -- those which don't meet those requirements can't be registered in the state. Do automobile companies sue the state because they can't sell those automobiles there? No. There are "dry" counties where alcohol sales are prohibited. Do other counties take them to court because their alcohol products can't be sold there? No. There are also various pet species which are not legal to own in California that are legal elsewhere. Should breeders of those pets challenge California because they can't sell gerbils or ferrets there? No. California is not saying Missouri MUST meet California's cage size requirements. But if Missouri wishes to sell a product to California, it must be a product legal in California.

:)

I say screw Missouri and screw California (I live there) Raise your own chickens or buy your eggs localy. In my opinion most laws only look good on paper anyway. Kinda like engineering blueprints. Lots of thought process very little hands on experience.

Don't all cars have to meet the emissions no matter how they are made ? The dry counties don't allow anyone to sell alcohol no matter how it's made. The pets not allowed in Calif. cannot come from any state, not just some states.

Calif. can ban all eggs or require that all eggs sold in Calif. meet quality standards as they do with cars and some pets. Do you think Calif. should be able to say how much a worker should be paid to build the cars ?

I don't think your arguments are valid, but ultimately, it doesn't matter. The law has been passed, the case will come to court, and it will be decided there. Whatever you or I or anyone else says has nothing to do with the outcome, though it will be interesting to see how it is decided.
