last summer my girls were young and we had a full summer of rain and lower heat in Central GA. August this year has been dry and hot. altho not as hot as we have had in past, 2012 we had true temps of 108, thank goodness our summer has not been that hot this year! Although the coop is under trees, the morning to noon sun blasts the front of the pen and the shade and fan have really helped. Cannot wait til Fall, our weather keeps humans inside too! We don't usually cool off enough til late September. The past few days our temps have been 90 in the shade, and my girls are doing well with shade, fan, cold/iced water.I am glad to see that your girls are doing great with the shade. It looks like your coop has a tree shade on top so that is great. These last days we have had a break in the temp where we are so it has gotten up to 90. I might say it is some sort of relief from the 100 temp we have had. My girls are still panting but only on the hottest time of the day. One more month and we will get in the 80s Can't wait for that to happen. Keep your mist fan as an option for when it gets over 100 which is when we really should worry about heat stroke.
RE: Mist: I do plan to use if temps increase, but hope I don't' need it. Today, one of my BO's started panting, and I scooped cool water from iced/water and placed it on her head. She wasn't' too happy with that, shook her head, and the panting stopped!
Surprisingly! my Hens are still laying normally despite the heat! Hope yours are too.
