Hello. One of my friends has recently had a serious problem with mites on her chickens and ducks... they treated twice before the vet said they had to put them all down. I am on the other side of town and have not seen any indication of mites or lice however, I would like to prevent this from happening to my birds. What preventative measures could/should I take?
Thank you

Why did he say put them down? my goodness my chickens have had mites several times and I treat and never have had to put any down. Ducks if given adequate bathing water won't get mites usually. I use for an out break Epernix Pour on you use it the same as frontline for dogs except you put a couple drops on the skin at the vent area too along with on the neck. if you treat the coop you have to clean out all old bedding and dispose of it [don't put it around your home or you'll never get rid of the mites.] then you spray your coop top to bottom especially the cracks and crevices with something like sevin or poultry protector mixed at the proper amount making sure to get under and above on all roosting poles, What I have been doing this year is trying preventive, by mixing garlic powdered into the fermented feed I make up for my flock some use fresh whole garlic cloves and chop into drinking water. and spraying the roosts top and bottom 1x a week with Neem oil or Poultry protector. you can also use poultry dust on coop and birds but I don't like to inhale the dust and don't like to use it. after treatment on coop and birds let dry then add small amount of bedding because in 7-10 days you'll have to treat again to kill nits that hatch. Pretty good bit of work but much better than having birds put down. Mites will kil a bird if not treated it can cause anemia.

I use sevin dust sprinkled in their house. Some people sprinkle it on the animals themselves.
Yep put the dust into a bag put chicken inside all but head close bag and shake [but don't bake]
