After a previous post of mine I checked my flock and they do indeed have both scaly leg mites and red mites. I've looked at lots of threads on this site and I'm really confused on what to do. Is Sevin a last ditch solution for the red mites or do the benefits to the chicks outweigh the possible problems associated with it? Are there any really good products available in the US? I was researching and found all the good stuff is only available in the UK, New Zealand and Australia! I'm overwhelmed, feel awful for my birds and am angry at myself for not knowing this was going on till it got this bad. Thanks for any advice!

Permethrin would be a much better choice than Sevin which is no longer approved for chickens. You can find a pint of permethrin 10 concentrate (Martins or Gordons) for about $9 at TXSC that can be mixed with water according to the inside label, and used with a spray bottle on the chicken or to treat the coop, roosts, and nests. Permethrin garden dust is also found in most feed stores, and is good to use during cold weather. It can be applied with pantyhose made into a powder puff.

For scaly leg mites, I would use an oil such as vaseline or mineral oil once a week, and rub it into the scales to smother the leg mites. Here is some info on permethrin and lice/mites:

Thanks for the advice. I really appreciate input from more experienced chicken keepers.

Thanks! How often do you dust the birds and how often do you put vaseline on their legs?
