Hi! We have a sick chicken. At first he seemed to have an impacted crop. We cleared that up but he hasn't really improved. I went out to feed him some extra today and saw what is in the picture. Am I right in thinking these are mites?? He has lost weight and is very lethargic. Tomorrow I will be purchasing a new coop for him and his lady. Their current one is old anyway, and needs replacing. We are purchasing Ivermectin, herbs, and a poultry spray. What is the best way to treat him? I'm so worried for him.

Garden & Poultry dust ... Permethrin is the ingredient that you need.
You can dust the birds and the concentrate, mix as directed to spray the coop. nest box and area. Think you retreat 7 - 10 days later (eggs hatch) I'd do it for a month to make sure. Treat the old coop even if you'll be purchasing a new, unless you rid the birds of the critters before moving them into the new coop.

I was planning to buy the coop tomorrow and my dad was going to tear down the old one and burn it (it can't be used for anything else). Ideally I'd like to put them in their new coop tomorrow. If that's the case, what do I do with the new coop to keep it from getting mites? We're going to treat the birds in the morning tomorrow. If we put them in the new coop that night will the mites spread to the new coop?

Won't Ivermectin treat for all internal parasites and mites/lice? Seems like that would be a good place to start, then follow up with Permethrin dust. Just thinking out loud because once they are actually infested, seems like a good time to use the serious medications.

That's what I think I'm going to do. Thank you!

UPDATE:
Tweety is doing so much better! We removed the old coop and dusted him and his lady (Spinach) with food grade diatomaceous earth. We then put them in a little tiny coop we have in the run of my bantams. They did not like this at all, but it was only for one night so they were okay in the morning. I also put the DE on the ground in their run after the coop was removed. When we put the new coop in I sprinkled it with DE as well. After N1 of the dust the mites on Tweety looked almost fully gone. And by N2 I couldn't see any. It took him a few days but he has started to gain his strength back. Today I saw him giving himself a dirt bath under his new coop. I'm so happy- we really thought we were going to lose him. I believe he was probably in the process of dying when we noticed the mites. Luckily he has pulled back! Thank you so much for all of your advice.

I'm so glad your Tweety is doing better, and thanks for the update. Nice to know what has worked for some. We just lost a new chick to mites today, it was horrible, they were crawling all over her face. I looked at her mom and her vent is covered with them! I usually dust with DE every time I clean the coop but haven't this year for some reason. uGH!
