Hi there
I recently bought a new bag of chook food and when I brought it home, I found black small insects crawling out of the bag. They seem to be through the whole bag of food. Can you let me know if I should be concerned?

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! I would be and would not use the food for my chickens. Not knowing what these black bugs are you don't know what they are carrying and what they may have contaminated the food with. I would return the bag to where you purchased it from and ask for a replacement bag from them. I certainly would.

Enjoy BYC and all the chicken chat. Be sure to ask any more questions you may have the forum is very diverse with a section for all your chicken questions. Here is the link for the feed and water section https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/12/feeding-amp-watering-your-flock :frow

I would definitely return it. In fact I don't think I would buy from that store again. Their feed isn't stored properly. BTW Welcome to the Backyard chickens flock, glad you joined us

Howdy mokak

I recently experienced the same issue.

Bad timing on my part meant that I could not get to my normal Feed Store and I popped around to the local market which sells small bags of chicken feed that would have done me until I could get to my normal store.

PS. I note you called it "chook food" .. Aussie perhaps? Would be a huge coincidence if it was the same market!

Anyways, I got the bag home, it was in another plastic bag with handles, luckily looked inside the bag before I got inside the house and it was crawling with little black bugs! Little black bugs all over the back seat of the car also!

I put it back in the car and drove back to the market. Explained the situation and they offered to replace the bag; each bag they bought out had little black bugs in it! I told them not to bother, went home, fumigated the car and swore to never shop there again!

The shop assistant told me that it was not their fault as such and the bugs eggs would have come in on the grain ... I have had chickens for two years now and never had the problem before or since.

Thanks for all your feedback. My partner emptied the 20kg bag into the food storage box so I will endeavour the put it all back into the original bag and send it back tomorrow morning. I have since fumigated the back of my car and need so spray something around the coop which is close to their food storage box.
Yes we are from Australia, Melbourne.
